A lot of people use the same tiresome image/file sharing sites and text pasting sites on the web, Some people use the file sharing sites for posting new maps. What is annoying about many of these is that they have tons of ads or they have some sort of delay feature before you can start the download (so you have to look at their ads). Either way, they usually suck.

So, here are some alternatives that I've recently found and I wanted to share them. The code for both of these sites is available open source.

Image and file sharing

This seems like the file sharing app that everyone has wanted.
Has a 64MB limit
No ads.
No annoyances.
Can upload multiple files at once.
Has a firefox extension.
If you use it to post images to heavily traveled sites, like digg or slashdot, then they will block those. The code for omploader is available open source, so you can run it on your own server if you'd like. It's written in Ruby.

Text pasting
The problem I have with most text paste sites is that they allow search engines to spider their content, or they allow people to browse recent pastes. I found that out by accident and I was on the lookout for a paste site that didn't have this problem. I was using http://pastie.org until I found my pastes showing up on google. I recently found one that doesn't have that problem. It has a 30day expiration of pastes and with decent syntax highlighting options. It's written with django, that's where the name comes from. This is also available open source if you want to run it on your own (look at the about link)

i'm not sure i understand. do you mean the images? how would that be a downside?

pastie.org is (yet another) text pasting service. I liked it at first, but then I realized the pastes on that site (and most pasting sites) are searchable.

For example, you can see tons of pastes on pastie.org here

and you can also search through previous pastes right on their site

as compared to the same google search on dpaste where absolutely no pastes are indexed and there is no search feature on the dpaste site.

So dpaste.com is a more private pasting site. For 99.9% of pastes, privacy isn't a big deal. But I would prefer to use a text pasting service that isn't indexed on search engines so I don't have to even worry about that.

As a side benefit, if dpaste.com ever changes and adds a search option or starts being indexed, I can then use their sourcecode and make my own private paste site.
