  • Hi guys, I collected here some cool ideas, so newer / funnier game situations can appear in Nexuiz. I hope some developers read it carefully too and might consider adding 1-2 to the newest version, aaand of course everyone can express his opinion or make up newer / better ideas or advance these ones further :)

    So the results of my afternoon brainstorming, insipred by some energy drink :D

    1, make a cvar for nex to enable shooting through walls, so server admins can decide wether to add this feature to the owned server to make some gameplay changes (this feature would kill static camping on the most known camping spots)

    2, there are 10 choosable message / name colors, 2 of them are gray. and the difference between them is not too much. I miss orange or brown from this list more than I would want to use 2 different gray colors :P Names would look much cooler

    3, create a simple interface that lists all the demo files you recorded, and you can choose the corrent one you want to play. I think demo recording worths a simple and easy interface so players dont have to fire up the command line everytime they want to watch something. And maybe there should be "play" "pause" "fast forward" buttons at the bottom of the screen while demo is being played, but this solution might be harder to code (dont know how the capturing works)

    4, when player presses the teamspeak hotkey for "attacking" or "defending", it would help fantastically to keep the organization within the team if it would be displayed on the score screen too. Just place a small box near the players name that gets filled with "A" or "D" depending on bind the player pressed. This way everyone could see that there is no defence in the team coz all the guys are rushing, or the oppsite. I'm sure this feature would be easy to code.... :P (and would purge teamspeaks like "Why the f*ck is noone defending?" or "TEAM SAVE NOT!!!")

    5, make the teleports let them through not just the body of the players but grenades, rockets and other entities too. This feature would surely create the funniest game situations ^^

    6, to avoid constant flagcarrier hidings and to roll up gameplay there should be a sprite placed on the enemys flagcarriers current location after every 15th second for 1 second long (or something like that). I'm sure everyone knows the unfindable flagcarrier story on the map "accident" hiding behind the game area, or the same on hourglass. This would make matches a little more fluid.

    7, do something with hagars secondary plzzzzzz!!! :D I almost never see anyone using it, and anyway, hagar itself is picked up so many times just to feed mortar and rocketlauncher with more ammo......... :P Its secondary is almost useless, I dont think nexuiz needs another bouncing bullet same almost same like grenade secondary and similar to electros secondary and the new crylinks primary. It should be replaced with some innovative feature, that makes hagar worth / loved to use. Just a very simple idea I already told many guys: replace with small guideable rockets, or with a special rocket, that pushes everyone in a huge area a little (something like within a 5 meter radius for 50 ammo and 5 second refire and no damage), so the organization of a camping party can be broken. The key is the area it affects not the push amount (that should be not too high)

    8, give laser secondary a loadable feature, so players can charge it up to a maximum rocket-like shot after 6-7 second. The current secondary "shot" isnt a secondary shot... :P

    9, add a scope-like effect for nex's right click zoom on the purpose to make newbies camp less on maps by reducing the visibity field this way. (you dont see anything around the scope's "circle"). I know nex doesnt want to be a sniper rifle (eventhough its new model makes it quite similar :P), but this way zoomers would have less control over a wide territory in the game.

    10, I know its not UT, but a "first blood" sound would be awesome :D

    Okey thats it for today, I wait for you opinions about these ideas, i hope they would turn the gameplay into a more positive direction :)[/list]

    It's a big change... new strategies in many maps... It could be tried. (LOL u could be telefragged by items)

    I agree only if the fc is hiding for long time (20 seconds) in the same place.

    Any different hagar secondary shot can be better than the current one.

    Very very cool idea. The shot with a big amount of ammo and also the big push with no damage. I want it right now! :)

    We all want a real laser secondary shot. OK

I know nex doesnt want to be a sniper rifle (eventhough its new model makes it quite similar :P), but this way zoomers would have less control over a wide territory in the game.

    More real behavior but I prefer the normal zoom. Furthermore those ones that use fov zoom don't have this limitation.

  • I'm for point 9 and 10 right now. :P
    But actually you can zoom with every weapon using the zoom key. This is some stuff from the Quake-games, that I don't really understand, but anyway, I don't think it's gonna be removed.
    Point 5 may be fun, adding to the overall chaos, but it could become very annoying too. I would suggest to make this a mutator option or something.
    And the demo menu was about to return in a future release anyway.

    I said it before, but everyone's ignoring me... :P

    *Throws a broken hagar at tZork's head to get his attention.*

    tZork has made a new hagar secondary: it shoots a series of bullets and the first one has to hit its target, the other ones will follow the target then like a swarm of wasps. For the victim the only way to get rid of them is to let them crash into the wall by some clever movement.

    It`s really fun to use and completely different from the other weapons, not just a difference in how strong, instant hit or not, spread or not...

    The code for it even exists, so you just have to persuade the devs to take it into the mainstream Nexuiz. :)

  • That would take some careful consideration. Think of the noobs spamming it, its going to need to have a really low refire rate.
    Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

    g_throughfloor 0 turns it off. Already cvarred.

    The engine aims to be conforming to Quake 3 Arena there, so there is nothing to do about it. Also, changing this would recolor quite many nicknames. If we were to make our own name coloring system, sure, it'd be a great idea.

    I was however thinking about adding new sequences like ^A to ^Q to select from the same palette as player colors.

    It's not as easy as you think it is... give us an army of coders and we'll do it. We currently have ONE(!) active coder (and a half for the engine), and he's busy with other stuff too.

    I do not think this will help, as people will not do that they announced anyway. But the team radar does a better job at this by showing you where your team mates are (which IMHO is a stronger indication than just their CLAIMS to be attacking/defending/whatever).

    Can't be done without redoing all existing maps, as the teleporter entity lacks information about the "normal direction". To see that it IS possible if mappers had provided additional information, check out the Port-O-Launch weapon which does do this.

    I like the secondary, but the idea to make it like the laser guided missiles could be neat (it then still would not be too strong, I think, but it'd add the coolness from the LG missiles to normal games too).

    Hm... not sure. Too many are used to using the secondary as is... to switch back immediately after jumping. But could be considered in the future.

    Good idea, but we can't do this. Many people use .cfg scripts setting the "fov" variable to zoom instead, and that of course could not show that scope effect. So if we did do it, people would simply circumvent it.

    Why not. And, as a joke, I want the (pickupable, not in MinstaGib) MinstaNex to say "Impressive", "Head shot" AND "Yoda" :P

    4. Open the file in Notepad again

    You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

    Well, I'm sure it would be the end of the world for players that their namecolor is changed, and they have to change a number in the menu from 8 to 9 or something :P The idea was to make a cool trasition between yellow and red that it miss much.

    Many very very good CTF players that I asked thought that this statusdisplayer-box would help drastically... I will stick to this idea hard in the future, and spread it, coz if something, this tiny change COULD bring some tactic into the game by helping keeping the roles organized within teams :P There is big problem with radar: just imagine that you want to know wether the 2 guys around the flags are defending, or just freshly spawned or wtf. So you need to watch them for about 10 secs to see if they move around, pick up weapons, go for attack, or they are still constantly stay in the flagroom. With my idea it would be a tab key to show scores, and there we go... :P

    Yeah I still don't understand that if there is such a great and unique idea, as laser-guidance under the hood of nexuiz, why isn't it used somehow in any weapons.

    I know some players are used to laser secondary to switch weapons, absolutely the same here too. But if you think about that, that if someone uses laser in a weapon-combination, that guy surely isnt a noob, so he must have all the weapons binded around WASD, it wouldnt be the end of the world to press "E" key to switch back to nex or something... :)

    I just KNEW that everyone would misunderstand it :D The primary point is not to make a nice scope effect, but to cover out many parts of the screen. I use fov zoom too, i know the idea can be get around, but the purpose is to inspire newbies to give up constant nex-camping! Later when he gets better he gets know fov zoom, but until then he would use other weapons too. This is against the noob-nex-camping tendency, not for the neat-looking effect itself.

    Well, I'd rather think about adding more colors, than changing what existing ones do.

    It sure is used - when the "laser guided missiles" mutator is on. It just is not by default.

    It's still less work to just press the right mouse button. Anyway, if we get a USEFUL laser fire on the right mouse button, why not. But not something not that useful to replace the VERY useful current feature.

    Nope, our noobs would simply get a pk3 with an autoexec.cfg from some server that turns off the image. I bet it will even be a "ladder approved" pk3...

    How about a colorchange of the triangles on the radar? For example, an attacking teammate could have a red color for an amount of time, and a defender could be green.

    It's actually not so easy to use. The first bullet has to hit the victim. If it misses and makes a hole into a wall the other bullets of the series are also automatically wasted as well

    And the behavior is quite opposite of a laser guided missile: while for the laser-guidance you have to take care of your shot until it hits, for this hagar mod you can even turn away and do something else while the series of shots still fires...

    (the series of shots that follow the first one has a defined length, so you can't send 100 shots after the first one hit. ;) )

    Yes. More colors instead of modifying the existing ones.

    I thought a simply solution that doesn't recolor old nicknames, compatible with Quake 3 Arena with not so big differences in colors:
    ^1 is red ---> ^1^1 is dark red, ^2^1 is brown (colors near to red), ^4 is blue ---> ^1^4 is dark blue, ^2^4 is indigo (colors near to blue) etc.... And so on for each color. A max of 100 colors can be created instead of current 10.

    With the current implementation ^1^1 and ^2^1 are still red, with the new system are dark red and brown, ^1^4 and ^2^4 are still blue, with the new system are dark blue and indigo...

  • I agree that laser guided rockets would be fun. I even made a similar comment last month.

    Are you guys thinking a cluster of rockets, a variation of rapid fire rockets, or what?

  • If you have tried the Port-O-Launch, you see that letting rockets teleport is sure POSSIBLE. The only problem is that all maps that have teleporters would need to be redone for it. Is it really worth throwing away all existing maps?
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

    You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Yes I tried the PoL and its awesome but which name have the ammo (set g_start_ammo_<PoL ammo> 25) need it for playing around with the PoL in my private games :D

    you can made a additional portal for all(player and weapon)
    then it gives two sorts of portals and the old havent to redone ande the mapper who like this can add this or/and the other

  • The PoL always just has one shot. However, g_use_ammunition 0 makes all weapons (that one included) unlimited.

    The same handling is planned for superweapons if anyone makes any.
