  • gn8
In context, this means 'good night', but as Urmel spelled it, it read in english as 'good nate'.
I am guessing that gn8 stands for 'Gute Nacht', but since we were on an english channel, it would be better to just say gn.

Arf, h3h3, as u surely know there are also other english tongues than the american ones. Ask an aussie about the difference between n8 and night, m8

  • I would say spelt sounds better than spelled, it sounds awkward. Nevermind, for those missing the point of the conversation, English has no offical definition. None of the dialects even have definitive dictionaries, not even the OED.

Or should that be smart arses?

I wouldn't use dictionary.com on such an issue as it seems to have random lexical differences everywhere.

Argh! We need a body to regulate the English language. You Germans are lucky in that you can sweep aside redundant letters in words so easily!

Apostrophes in English became so abused that they are now being killed off. The so called 'green grocers apostrophe' where words are pluralised (or pluralized pre 1970's) with apostrophes is wrong but now it is considered wrong to use them to pluralise acronyms and abbreviations. That's where they should be used! Thank you very much the Apostrophe Apprecaiation Soceity!

  • I agree, lot's of people use apostrophe's incorrectly, and it looks terrible.
Those people need to stop listening to their CDs and MP3s and start reading book's.

  • The question was not the spelling of any word, but the difference between the US and UK versions of the past tense form of the word 'spell' (spelled/spelt).

The Apostrophe appreciation soceity would write that:
Those people need to stop listening to their CDs and MP3s and start reading books.

By the green groceers apostrophe it would be:
Those people need to stop listening to their CD's and MP3's and start reading book's.

Using an apostrophe for pluralising a word has always been wrong. However, before the 1990s (ie the 1980's) it was OK to use an apostrophe when pluralising numbers, abbreviations and acronyms to show that the s was not part of it.
Those people need to stop listening to their CD's and MP3's and start reading books.

This old correct piece of English has been wiped out by the 'Grammar Nazis' that C.Brutail warns us of.

A further, really, really pointlessly small piece of incorrect English:
The song 'Can I kick it?' by A Tribe called Quest (http://www.lyricsdepot.com/a-tribe-call ... ck-it.html) should be called 'May I kick it?' and then the next line should be 'Yes you may.'
