Model Critique

  • Open source is inspiring. After a lot of thinking and considering some ideas for games, I decided to try making a mod that tries to do everything FPS (not "tactical shooters) do right. Unfortunately, any true coding is way beyond me, so I'm using the Source Engine rather than id-tech.
Basic idea: Self-parodying, multiplayer-only game about a dystopian future where rebels fight for the freedom of their home planet... with Nerf-guns.
I'm doing the art, my friend is scripting and doing whatever light coding he can, and I just wanted to ask the Nexuiz devs for some critique on my first weapon model.

This is actually the most complex model. It's going to be a super-weapon comparable to the Railgun or the Nex, just with very limited ammo and much more power. I designed this one myself rather than tracing a real gun because I wanted to give it a homemade, hodgepodge feel. It's not completely finished, and it won't be until I can run it through XSI for some things with curves (and textures) but I'm just looking for some suggestions on the overall design.

    EDIT:

The melee weapon, no softshading, default Blender lighting. This should look a lot better in game with normal mapping and reasonable lighting.

That's why I said 'usually'. But taking that design above in consideration, it would be similar to that. But I haven't seen a knife with about 1 cm thickness and only the top sharpened.
But of course, one can also create a fantasy knife in which case it can look however one wishes to.

  • It's supposed to be comically disproportionate, really. Foam doesn't do so well when it's paper-thin.

They should just make it out of sharp metal and wrap it in thin foam.
