  • looks like it might be a long-legged version of a brown recluse. Those are common in the south-east US. We have them here in Kentucky.

    http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/pi/enpp/ento/venomousspiders.html#recluse

Their venom acts very slowly and deteriorates flesh over a period of days or weeks. Do a google search for brown recluse bites and you'll see some pictures that are pretty horrible.

  • It would be a lot less big and scary if you had taken a lower resolution picture of it. Then it wouldn't have filled my entire screen.

  • It looks like a wolf spider.

Does it have 2 large forward looking eyes? I can't tell by your pic.

The below pic displays a wolf spider, please use it for comparison.

  • leg stance and relatively small (compared to hunting spiders) head/eyes makes me think its some kinda crab spider. Spiders the size of a hand are indeed unusual tough, should make it fairly easy to lookup.

  • I once found a housefly a few summers ago on the screen covering my open window that was HUGE. I never saw a fly that big before, and I never have after that.

It looked like that below, but it was wider than my index finger, and longer than the length of my finger tip to it's first joint on my index finger. It had really big eyes too, I could even see black lines in it's eyes, which I think were blood vessels or something.

I could not find your spider exactly on any bug/spider identifyers I checked, but I think it was abnormally big, just like my fly that I found..

  • I'm somewhere with Komier in the same place there (phobia-wise) that's why i avoided looking at this thread until now. On the other hand, i find spiders highly fascinating. Wonderful sample, -z-.

    (P.S.: The image-hover-resize feature has a mean effect here. -_- )

    Edit:
It does look a bit like a recluse, but my first impression reminded me of a spider i saw while sitting a whole night in our garden (i do stuff like that occasionally). Probably a water- or hunting spider (fishing spider, huntsman).

    Most-likely a huntsman.
