New. Server suggestions, noob friendly?

  • Hey guys. I'm new to the Nexuiz scene. I'm actually downloading it for Linux right now. I am interested in a server that will give me the best newbie experience. I understand that because this game isn't as widely played as some commercial games, that a lot of the people that play it are old regulars and likely to kick my teeth in. I'm okay with that. However, I would like to play on a server that has cool people that aren't going to think I'm in the way. Please suggest some.

Also I would like to think that all servers are trustworthy but I don't believe this is the case. Is there any security risk by playing on random servers? I'm new to Linux as well but I was wary of that even under windows.

    Peace,
    Crunchy the Headcrab

P.s. I'm going to play some bots first to figure things out.

Edit: Oh snap. I didn't realize there were seperate general discussions for alientrap and nexuiz. My bad.

  • i'll play with you some time on release ver, and help you out a bit. No risk, but someone can edit the game code and attempt to hack you or something i guess.

  • Oh. Thanks for replying. I've been playing the game and it seems really good. Once I turned up the graphics a bit, it looks really nice too. The install was as easy as unzipping a folder (which is amazing). Apparently it works with my OS without any additional packages needed (I already have Nvidia installed). Just toying around with it some more to get comfortable and then I'll hop on some servers and get fragged...*I mean frag some people*

  • As for security: worst thing an evil server can do to you, is make the game unplayable, e.g. by messing with your binds, or sending you an alternate progs.dat (game code). He cannot "escape" to your operating system, as the DP console and the progs.dat code run in a sandbox not able to read or write anywhere outside the nexuiz data directories.

If that happened, just delete your ~/.nexuiz directory and you can start Nexuiz again (but will have to set up your player settings again).

Ideally, make a backup of ~/.nexuiz once you have everything set up, and all should be fine.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • If you are located somewhere in Europe, you might want to start out DCC's Beginners Delight server, a server specifically for beginning Nexuiz players. I have no idea if there is such a server in the US too, that would be great.

And of course, welcome to Nexuiz :)

Okay, I will do this within the week, I've just been quite busy with work recently. Adding the CTS maps will require me to update the mapinfo files to compensate for the changes in the gametype prefixes. I think I will also add the help.cfg

    Other suggestions are welcome.

  • We've actually totally replanned the dojo and started work. We have it documented in the Nexuiz Ninjaz project management system and some starting architecture in NN SVN. MooKow, Fabzor and myself were working on it, haven't done much in a while though because of other projects.

I've opened things up a bit more on the project management system, feel free to sign up and get involved, here is basically what we have laid out for the dojo v2

here I've begun building an entrance leading up to the new dojo (not yet built)
