  • If that were my monitor I'd be PISSED. The easiest way to get fragged is to use an LCD screen. CRT > EVERYTHING ELSE.

What you say is true for the very first LCD screens. I've played Nexuiz on both CRT and my own LCD screen which has awesome latency and no smearing whatsoever. And I don't notice really any difference at all.

  • Maybe you shouldn't have bent the casing so much? I mean, you can tell from the picture that the casing is strangely bent into curves.

Remember: TFT and CRT are not like Patch and Brush

    ;)

  • I had the same problem on my 24" LCD, but the pixels where red. It was the DVI cable fault. I wiggled the dvi cable attached to the monitor and the red pixels moved around and then I got a bluescreen. This happened on the LAN we were on.
But when I screwed the cable in tight I had no problem. I hope it helps for you.

High-end LCDs have a 5ms response. Ass-end CRTs have an instant response. I tried to play on LCDs at my tech school (they had Sceptres and Samsung Sync Masters) a few times and just could not stand them. The CRT I have right now isn't bad (EXACTLY 56 rows away from 1080i) and it uses a VGA cable. I almost forgot to mention how much better these things look in comparison, I used the box for my Unreal Anthology to calibrate my settings and got my monitor to match it's quality.

  • Another topic high-jacked... btw has anyone noticed that Nexuiz runs best on Windows and that Linux and MacOS are just CRAP because you cannot even get decent programs to run on them?

Yup, that's what your brother told me, but I tried and it doesn't help how the cable is attached, I even get the thing with my VGA input.
I talked to support today and they said it could be the connectors on the monitor which are faulty. So, they are gonna send me a new one and pick this one up, yep, they are coming home to me to do this. ^_^
    What a luxury.

  • Anything above a 21 inch monitor is usually a TN panel. Better quality monitors generally use PVA or S-IPS; they have much better color reproduction. The only downside is that the response time is a bit higher, but since humans can only really perceive intervals of 200ms, it's not a big deal.

Then again, a bigger screen is pretty nice to work with. meh. TN is good if you're on a budget I guess.

My monitor is absolute crap so I probably shouldn't be talking :P

  • As much as i like my LCD (samsung 2ms) for text, movies, browsing ... it just suck for gaming compared to a CRT. My LCD is quite recent and is one with the fastest response time in most reviews, even with the "special" gaming mode :/ its just not instant like my old phillips CRT. I was not noticing that anymore because i got used to it, but recently i had to put my lcd on my gf's mac because her lcd died. So i was back on the CRT for about 2 months. Changed my nexuiz refresh rate and Xorg refresh rate to 85hz and yeah its freaking awesome. Actually i did not noticed it that much when i went on the CRT, but when she got her new lcd and i got back mine. the difference was verrrrry obvious. Also, LCD dont do black, its a kind of very dark gray but its never pure black like a CRT does. Another weak point of all <500$ lcd's is that they have like 10-20 degree of maximum vertical viewing angle. So when you lean on your chair lower than usual all the constrast and colors shifts...very annoying. I guess all this is normal since the CRT technologie is about 50 years older and maturer than LCD.

  • 20000:1 is dynamic contrast. the screen lower the backlite in some situation. not real contrast at same backlite intensity.

I read closer and saw "dynamic contrast" written rigjt under the 20000:1. Sneaky sneaky.

  • Dunno, overall I'm happy with my monitors, minus the one that I need to turn off via it's powersupply sometimes. I have the same ones at work which have held up strong and deliver what I need, how I need it, when I need it :)

All that matters is if you're happy with a setup I guess, people have different computer needs after all.

  • No, it's the official monitor complaint thread.

My goddamn monitor is too bright at 0% luminosity, the colors give me a headache, and I can't make adjust saturation, even through the driver.

  • They are real numbers. They can be compared using the usual binary relations we all know :p

It just makes no sense. Besides showing off big numbers. Who doesn't like big numbers, eh.
