Suggestion: A map i'd really like to see in nexuiz.

  • I'm probably going to get flamed to some sort of hypothetical hell, but here goes:

This map, i've always wondered why this isn't in by default. I can't see many flaws in it, maybe the weapon placment is a little odd. Overall its a REALLY fun map. Good for movment tricks. It also brings the "fast paced" action that nexuiz claims to have. Its also really well textured with no errors i can see.

    Map: gasolinepowered_v1r2
    Licence: GNU GPL v2
Reason: Well balanced, does not encourage camping. great for any gamemode using hooks, underrated.
Extra notes: The map is of very high quality, as is the music and textures. offers excellent and fast paced gameplay, and fits well. It's name also fits as a compliment to deiselpower.

    Made by: FruitieX

Probably the best feature of this map is the jumppads. with a laserjump you can go ALOT further, and speed up dramatically. Its also my favourite map to play insta CTF on. esp with a hook.

  • Hi! Welcome
    to the forum!
Though it is a very nice map, it's for sure not that high quality to match Nexuiz standards (sorry FruitieX). But it's not far from that. Also, I've seen some pretty unbalanced games too, as an experienced player can easily fly through the map with lightspeed ;)

  • Sorry but no, this map is not good enough for official Nexuiz. As Brutail mentioned, one can easily fly right up to the Nex if you laser yourself on the base jump-pad. Then laser again on the Nex jump-pad to fly right into the enemys' base.
Plus, one can easily camp this map. If there even is one good Nexer he can pretty much stop almost stop all enemies from coming into the base. One basically just stands on the middle platform in the base where the Electro is. I did it once and just occasionally did one or two enemies manage to get in.

This map can be fun now and then, but far from good for official Nexuiz.

But I like that you try to get more maps as official, we really really need more maps. If you've got other suggestions we could check them out.

  • I agree with both c.brutail and ai about gasoline powered.

In addition, I'm not really sure why it would be important to include too many CTF maps within Nexuiz. The most popular CTF maps are not included with Nexuiz. People only play CTF locally on one of the single player levels. 99.999999% of CTF play happens on the public servers, where maps are downloaded.

I just think Nexuiz is a bit bloated as is. No need to add more maps to it if it's not necessary.

  • Well, it was worth a shot :P

Another map i think should be in (not as much as gasolinepowered, though) is dance, by dublpaws.

But IDK the licence, and i think dance has been discussed before.

    Actully, thats a good point.

How can you consider gasolinepowered as "too small" or "too fast from base to base" when you include eggandbacon? (which, for those who don't know, is a boxmap with the flags on ledges and a small amount of shielding in the bases & middle - you can get shot from everywhere unless you crouch)

I'd REALLY like to see the logic behind that...

  • It's already been explained on a number of occasions. Egg&Bacon is only in Nexuiz because it has all weapons in one single map. As soon as someone has a replacement for it (probably not only an improvement, but a full blown excellent Nexuiz map) it will go again.

I have always greatly enjoyed games on gasolinepowered and it's one of the _really_ good community maps.. +1 for inclusion..

  • maybe instead of including the map with nexuiz, somone could compile a second map pack. i can think of several maps that i would like to see with nexuiz, like some of the "your daily q3 maps" which were very good.
Why has a developer ever needed any reason other than "it looks bloody awesome?"

  • I was quite surprised when I've played this map for the first time. I generally don't like spacefloaters, but this is an exception. It's fast, fun and cool, and waaay better than some official Nexuiz maps( for example Evilspace - I hate that crap). So when I found this thread, I've decided to revamp it to match current standards, and to be included in Nexuiz.

I tried to preserve the architecture of the map, so there aren't any major structural changes. It's basically the same map with better textures and detail, and some experimental fixes for the gameplay problems.

    Some screenshots:

    List of changes:

    -Improved skybox.
-Replaced most textures with textures from the trak5 set, or with my own.
-The energy links between the bases now damages the player.
    -Added more cell ammo.
-Replaced Hagar with the HLAC, because to drain the extra cells, and because it's a "new' weapon.

Also attempted to fix the 'flying right to the enemy base and back' problem:
-Added "energy fences"; if somebody tries the laser+jumppad trick, he'll be most likely caught in the fence and will bounce off into space. It's still possible to fly into the base, but requires mortarjumping and a lot more skill.
-Removed the jumppads from the top of the central building. They were obsolete, and again landed the player at the enemy flag.
-Nex is now a bit harder to reach, and the energy fences are weaponclipped to prevent camping of the inner bases from the Nex spawn.
    -Placed billboards around the bases.

    Bugs:
-As this is an update to the previous maps and not a comletely new version, it may affect the older versions(black skybox, changed textures etc.)

  • You had best update these changes elsewhere too.

Also use http://omploader.org for your file hosting. Its much friendlier.

Ok the map looks much nicer, but because of the teleport camera view thing there are HUGE frame drops. I recommend removing those back to what they were even if they are damn cool.

Also now the nex is nice and inaccesible unless you know how to laser jump
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

  • I'm not sure about the cause of the fps drops, but it isn't caused by the teleporters. They're the same as in the original, I only added a simple patch with a scrolling noise texture. The fps is consistent everywhere on my not-quite-awesome machine with high settings. Try to lower the texture resolution, maybe it helps.

  • i think its the "fence" .. i get 17 fps at the jumppads.
you can jump over them with a perfect laserjumppad jump tho 8)

  • Whoa, people still play this crap? :P

Anyway, nice remake Agelith! Something's definitely wrong with the teleporter shaders though (probably left in some of my reflecting shaders, I recall experimenting with that), I'm getting horrible framerates with reflections turned on! Also I'd suggest you to remove the clip from the stairs, as the stairbug is at least a bit more rare in recent Nexuiz. Not sure about the shields either, they should maybe just kill the player instead of pushing him. I might take a look at this once you have finished it to see if it can still be improved further ;)

  • I have a love/hate relationship with Gasoline Powered. It's a really fun map when your not getting base raped by a bunch of campers that have the nex locked down and when you can actually pick up a weapon.
I have left this website with the rest of the GPL Nexuiz community. You can find us at Xonotic.org

  • Gasoline is a fun map but its way too open to become an official Nexuiz map. Its extremely linear and way too easily to camp: if you pick up Nex you can completely lock down the base, because the weapons supply nex with cells, and opponents trying to attack will always come flying so they are extremely easy targets. Also you can cover the nex pickup place once you picked it up from any point of the map.
The laser fences thing is not a bad idea, because its doing its function very well, but its not an organic, fitting element of the map, camping should be instead solved by changing the map layout.

  • I'll be participating, I just want to be clear- does the map have to be one of those things at the top, or are those just a suggestion for what one can do? Also, about the more than 1 map thing- if a person submits more than 1 map, will the points simply be added for the mapper's final score? Or will the scores for each map be separate? As far as I know the health and weapon changes are the ones that are borrowed from the havoc mod. Basically they are loosely inspired from Quake, trying to make each weapon uniquely usable, each catering for different situations. This doesn't resemble Quake 3 a lot actually but it does use the same base for the weapons themselves, however some of the changes are weird in my opinion, while IMO some of the default Nexuiz weapons need some tweaks or extra changes to make them more unique or make them feel more natural to use, it never required a complete overhaul like this. I would also limit the health for players to some reasonable number, 200-200 like most shooters this approach allows for stacks however having going above 100-100 should be limited to megahealth, megaarmor and shards. Weapons can then be balanced for the new health without changing their default behaviour. Revising maps to take away health and armor is not such a good idea, new maps that are not built with this in mind will still suffer from the problem it will add a lot of work in the end while only fixing the problem on some "official" maps.
