Invitation to Southern California Linux Expo 8x

Post anything on anything here

Moderator: Moderators

  • Greetings,

I would like to formerly invite the Nexiuz project to attend the 8th Annual Southern California Linux Expo. The show will be held February 19th-21st, 2010 at the Westin LAX in Los Angeles, CA.

Because Nexuiz is an open source project, SCALE will provide a complementary booth on our show floor including all the usual amenities such a 6' table, chairs, 500W power drop, one Ethernet drop and complementary passes to the show.

More information about the show can be found at our web site, http://www.socallinuxexpo.org.
Any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

    Thanks!

  • This is obviously great news, but we need community members in this area who are up to the task of getting the stand going. I think most of our developers do not live in that area, so any players with a reasonable amount of knowledge of Nexuiz are welcome to help organize this.

Anyone willing to volunteer just post a reply and hopefully something good can happen.

  • I'm very interested. I live in Los Angeles, and I have *some* experience working booths at similar types of conventions. I used to work for a small music magazine in LA, who stuck me at a booth for the ASCAP "I Create Music" expo. It was pretty fun. We just handed out copies of the magazine and signed people up to our newsletter with a laptop. I've also been to the International Amusement Park Association Expo in Orlando. I was working for a web development company that was selling rental based website packages to park/ride owners. Again, it's not exactly a Linux expo but I'm sure it can't be much different. Booths, tables, people asking questions ect...

I'm pretty new to Nexuiz, so I'm not sure if I'd make the right 'spokesperson', but I offer my time and experience. As an avid Linux user for many years, I'm sure I'll want to wander around and drool at some point too =]. Anyone else in LA want to get something started?

  • I live nowhere near Los Angeles but do have enough air miles to get me there (and back... several times) for free if no one else can go. I also have lots of experience through work of providing product demos at conferences.

  • Hey,

Thanks to Ed and Benny for stepping up. If you're definitely interesting in representing Nexuiz at the show, send me an email and we can work out the details.

Would there be a benefit in posting this invitation into the General Discussion forum specifically for Nexuiz? Do people read that one and not this one?

    Thanks!

  • I can offer my help in designing for the booth, donating some for the materials / have them printed and mailed to you and perhaps even strategizing if anyone's open to that discussion.

I think it'd be great if Benny and Ed could work together on this.

  • Before everyone gets TOO excited, I'm only willing to do it if anyone else can't do it. Seeing how I am so far away, I would have thought that it would be more convenient for someone in North America to get there.

I do however need a holiday and have loads of leave to take so it is one idea...

  • I didn't post here before as I hadn't made a decision yet, but well i'm going to have to turn it down since this would be coming out of my own pocket, and I would have to pay for my wife to travel as well... Also I would need kennels for my cats/dog.... It's just too much of a hassle to fly out, sorry. But because of this, if anyone goes I have one rule.... BRING A VIDEO CAMERA AND RECORD IT! :D
Do it yourself, or stop complaining.

  • Ed, if you think it'll be fun - you should jump up and do it. I think that there isn't a whole lot of enthusiasts for it, as everyone seems to live far away from cali.

Here's another thought, if you have such a pile of leftover airmiles you can offer them to developers who might like to go but cannot afford the trip. Also I wonder what other expenses there would be, is a stay in the hotel covered with the entrance passes to the conference?

  • merlijn,

For folks who volunteer to help out at a booth there is no entrance fee to the show. We do not cover the cost of rooms at the hotel, we do have a group rate which is $115 per night and the rooms can sleep 4 adults. There are also many other hotels within walking distance of the Westin, including I believe a Motel 6.

If the group is interested in a booth at the show, I'll need to know fairly soon as space is filling up quickly.

    Thanks!

  • Realistically I'm not now going to be able to do this with work commitments around this time. Best of luck if someone local can do this.
