I've been using random (single letter usually) nicknames for the last 5 months.
Each time XChat loses the connection to the irc server, then reconnects, it finds that it's old nickname is still taken so it uses a diffrent one.

Why does that piss you off now? And how is it even that important or serious?
When someone messages me, xchat often just dumps it into whatever channel I'm on with >nickname< rather than <nickname>, so if something comes in and I'm not there I don't usually get it unless the person repeats. I wasn't maliciously trying to spam you, why would I do that? What would be the point.

Oh well, what's done is done I guess.
