  • Hello everyone :)

I am hosting "CTF Herforst Elite" on a dedicated Linux server.

Since I only have 2 maps in circulation (old UT's Face clone and "baconandeggs", which, I admit, are awesomely fun to play, I am looking for another good and fun to play CFT map to add to the mix.

    So .... any suggestions? :)

    Rainer aka RainMan

PS: Today I updated the server with the new 2.01 RC2 version.... Sorry for the downtime during the update.

  • Hi RainMan.
First of all thanks for hosting this server :)

I like also the ctf variant of runningman, it comes with nexuiz - so it should be no problem for u to add to your server :)

And also have a look here: http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=666
I havent played the map myself yet, but from the responses there it seems to be very cool.

  • yeah, controlfactor and runningmanctf are cool maps, I got em in my mappool on my "GreEns CTF server" as well!

  • Thats nice, i was about to compose a mail to you :) There are some funny maps on your server. Are you using SVN Nexuiz? It seemed so to me..

I would suppose runningmanctf (in nexuiz), controlfactor (in the post dIM linked), basementctf (in Nexuiz), tznex03, capturecity, greatwall_rev2, and sierpinski.

All those non-Nexuiz maps should be found here: http://141.2.16.3:7780/nex/maps/inofficial/
(Thanks to div0 for hosting the maps and other stuff)

  • many of the default CTF maps are too small. I prefer larger CTF maps. The smallest map I like is running man CTF. Good map, tho not much fun if you have old style hook enabled.

Hehe... well, I doubt flipzone would make a good CTF map, even though flipzone was "my joke"... no matter how you would place the flags, there would be a too short way between the flags and many other places wouldn't be used at all.

Admittedly, I did think of making flipzone a CTF map, but I couldn't find a good place to put the flag...
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • It would be good if your motd stated that you have non-standard gravity :)

    Who, Herforst Elite?

In that case... sure it was on purpose? There is one CTF map that changes gravity - and doesn't change it back. It is ctf_spacebase.

    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

  • I'm quite sure that server is the one i alwasy join by saying: "i hate this modified gravity".. but I might remember wrong.. I'm qute sure it is thuogh. playing nexface is very different on the two alltime-up CTF servers.

    edit:
yes. the hertfiorst elite CTF.. the movement is not as other places

  • I wouldn't suggest to run basementctf .. it's to small, and since your server is full of players most of the tiem that map is a pain

The only place i can think of is in the rl/armor room or between that one and the mortar. Weapons nearby, each teams owns a 'map'.. Sounds interesting but i'm not sure how well it can be played.

In that case baconandeggs is even worse :)

  • Thanks for the feedback, guys!

About the gravity - it's set to 500 to allow better grappling-hook action, especially for the "Face" map, which I loved since UT '99!

    Maps:
I personally don't like "Running Man", nor the other (few) CTF Maps provided. For some time, though, I had "Dismal" running and I thought it was fun! But after moving to Herforst, I ended up with only DSL 1000 (before that I had a Cable Modem), and all of a sudden "Dismal" was really jerky... So I dropped it from the mix.

I am still looking for a decent 3rd map, that is roughly about the side of "Face". With lots of "air" to catch... :)

I tried "sierpinski_beta2" for a while, watching the server log, and people said it was too big, and seemed happy when it was over...

If possible, do you have any screens of the maps you mentioned earlier? Seeing is believing, ya know? :)

Yes, most people don't understand the map - because the way to the flag isn't obvious enough.

tznex03 is a nice CTF map, you HAVE to include it :P
controlfactor, however, didn't get good response on my server, although personally I like it.

vitamea seems to be liked by enough people, but IMHO it is too hard to catch a running flag carrier.

Also try my "eggandbacon" - small, but people seem to like it and I've seen it played 8vs8 - and "capturecity", a large fragcity-style map for CTF (which apparently NEEDS the grappling hook - I disagree and prefer the laser on that map, but if people want the hook, they get it - I changed my server so that this map always runs with the hook on).
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

Well, your "eggandbacon" is one of the 2 maps I run... and I love it! :)

  • My CTF maps:

    tznex01
    klaustrofobic, strange. dont.

    tznex03
    large partialy very open map.

    controlfactor
    Semisymetrical multipath large open map.

    mentalspace
name says it.. twisted evil space floater.

Non of them are designed for hook or lowgrav, no idea how they will work with that. The webspace where i used to host em is currently gone.. so no screenies or dl links =/ sorry.

It doesn't have Domination support yet, but I could add it - where would you like the dom points?

  • hmmm.. the server stopped with a weird error message in the logs. Can someone please clarify this a bit?

Could you post the full trace?
An error like that can occur when there are a lot of explosions in one place, but i haven't seen that happen under normal conditions yet...
However i can't tell what happend without the full backtrace (the last 10 lines of console messages should suffice)

If the error message had something to do with wordwrap, it has been fixed today. It happened when someone say_team-s something that ended in \ (which happens on US keyboards because \ is right next to enter).

    So hopefully it was that...

  • Too many of them...

    far too many.

I'd, for example, place them like this:

    - one each base where otherwise the flag is
    - one in the middle of the long walkways
    - two around the strength (left/right of it on your picture)
    - one in each of the base entry rooms

which makes a total of 8 control points. That should work out, I'd rather place 10, but no idea where to put the other pair since it shouldn't be too close to the others.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

Sorry - I don't have that log anymore, as I overwrite my nohup.out file each time when I restart the server... :(

Next time it happens, I'll be sure to keep that log ...
