  • Some of you will already know this, in that case just ignore. I decided to try out some of the other free games like Alien Arena and came across this game: http://theprodukkt.com/kkrieger - Its just a small coding show-off sample so dont expect anything much, no multiplayer and such, not even options. You just run down some corridors and hallways and thats all.
Dont be irritated, the game IS that small. Really. Yes, in KILObytes.

  • And that's what makes it so great. All calculated in realtime. No story, no real AI to talk of, but why bother.

Make sure your computer is up to spec or it will look very wierd as then it can't calculate it in realtime so it just doesn't happen. No walls.

  • wow i didn't knew someting like that was possible.... i knew the demo-scene was globally really active... but THAT is the most impressive coding thing i've seen since a lotta years. Procedural textures generated on the fly ! God they are crazy

  • well kkrieger is pretty old by now so i guess their procedual textures were only a nice idea. Granted a very very nice idea but nowadays storage memory is rather cheap. I would however imagine it to be very useful for changing online games.. a MMPORG with new stories, dungeons and textures every weeks.. download a few kb of math instructions to calculate the textures.

where's the point? you got to download textures there ;) (although it would be nice to have math-instructed textures there... always takes long to load the textures...)

Storage memory's been cheap for a long time now, already when it was released. It's not that the demoscene is trying to achieve anything "useful" (imagine that) with this and intros. They're just doing it for the sake of doing it and trying to push the limits. There isn't and very likely never will be a reason to squeeze something that requires massive computation into 4k, 64k or indeed 96k.
