  • GameStop locations across the US are starting a Nexuiz PC gaming challenge in their stores.Interactive kiosks are currently set up in 10 different stores in 8 US cities. The kiosks give users 2 minutes to earn the high score by doing the most damage possible to their AI opponents.

The highest monthly scorer in each location wins a $100 GameStop gift card. There will be new maps every month, and each player is allowed one game per day.

Game play is open to GS customers ages 13 and up, and ages 17 and above are eligible to win the monthly gift card for the high score.

Cities with the Challenge: Dallas, Miami, Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco

  • Dang, closest to my current location is Dallas, but that's still like a six hour drive!

This is pretty awesome though :)

  • Los Angeles is a couple of hours away, so I'll probably pass, but this is great news anyway. More publicity means more players.

How did this come about? Did GameStop just do this on their own or did Alientrap prompt it?

  • Congrats, that is awesome exposure. It's great to see free/freeware games getting more and more recognition lately :)

  • Guys from Alientrap, congrats!
How did you make such deal with GameStop?! And who sponsors hardware and such?

  • Unfortunately, I'm not going into Chicago any time soon. If I did, I would own all (for my area, at least), as long as they let me customize my weapon layout. All it takes to Pwn bots is a lot of laserjumping, and rockets. Maybe I could sneak in a little R.Arena setting :)

Really, how did you guys get them to support it like this, I've never heard of a for-profit company supporting something alternative (and free) to them.

  • It's supported by Ads, so right before you play you see a small advertisement.

  • 2 Vermeulen,
Gotcha. How did that idea of a kiosk come across? And why GameStop?
Was it hard to negotiate with GameStop?

  • The advertisement is for a game development school. A marketing company represented them came to me with this idea, and I helped them set it up.

It's a pretty good deal, looking at the scores you have a good chance of winning if your a experienced player.

  • Damn, wish there was one closer to me...otherwise that's an easy hundred bucks I could pick up. :P

EDIT: Well, I'll be in San Jose next couple days for Thanksgiving with the in-laws...so I'm going to try getting over to the GS location there. A hundred buck gift cert for a retail game shop...wonder if they'll just let me have the gift cert on the spot so I can buy Crysis. :D

This info deserves inclusion on the Nexuiz Wikipedia page. I found Nexuiz on one of the FPS pages there and I'm probably not the only nerd who turns to Wikipedia so regularly. :)

[I wonder if any measures have been made to restrict usage of the console]

  • Well worth a trip on the commuter rail, I'd say. Where exactly is Boston's GameStop, though? I generally visit the Berklee area or the MFA when I'm up and I haven't seen a GS anywhere.

  • Hehe, actually this is a nice idea for a mod to be included in the Nexuiz campaign... "You have 4 bots and 2 minutes, deal at leats 3000 units of damage", and with frags counter showing the damage dealt instead...

    Maybe later :)
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Sorry but this has actually stopped a while ago.
There was at least a thousand players in total, and I think it ran for about 4-5 months.
