  • Hello, and welcome to the first test issue of Nexuiz News, the double N post that eases your hunger towards the fresh happenings in WoN ! (World of Nexuiz).

This is the first issue of the newsletter, and I hope you'll enjoy reading it. From now on, in a few days period I (we?) will post a few sentences about the development of Nexuiz and the buzz that goes around in the community.
Hopefully, the NN will get an own site in the near future, so you'll have another link in your bookmarks to grab infos :D

Anyway, enough of the bs, I say LET'S DO THIS, I SAY LET'S DO THIS!

    Development
For those, who are not familiar with the development of Nexuiz: as we know, Nexuiz is and open source game, and the development is rather fluent, and SVN commits are pretty regular. The SVN commit log can be found at:

    http://svn.icculus.org/nexuiz/trunk/cha ... iew=markup

There' still no conceptual release date of another stable version of Nexuiz, but looking at the changelogs, we can be sure about one thing: it'll blast, as always! Let's see what our developers have cooked for us ;)
The next release of Nexuiz will have a totally CSQC programmed menu (thx to Blub) , and will ship set of totally new skins "wicked", and player previews made by sev. There will be a sound channel mixer, and finally we can browse in the server list by filtering game modes too.
For mappers, Zeroradiant support is coming along with a few new entities: func_breakable func_pointparticles func_sparks misc_follow misc_laser trigger_flipflop, trigger_monoflip, trigger_multivibrator trigger_items. (More about them in the next issue of NN). The most important part could be however, is that the mapname.cfg is deprecated. Mappers should Use clientsettemp_for_type and cdtrack in mapname.mapinfo . There's an automatic shader generator script too.
Gameplay vise, we'll get two new mods, Race and Turrets by tZork. Also, thanks to Blub, our CSQC master, there's now a new, preview helped voting system! w00t! No more idiot maps voted 'cause of their idiot names. On community demand,(forum thread the crylink is weakened, primary eats now 2 cells and secondary fire mode does half damage. Some bugfixes here and there, like zoom unlagged, texturecompression for lightmaps are off (workaround for an OS X bug), hook sky-attach bug fixed (!), improved performace etc.
Heads up for server admins and masters: cmd maplist improved, and there are now commands to manage teamplay games, like moveing players from one team to another, lock/unlock teams, ready all players at once, and vlogin must be used instead of vdo login now. Oh, and there's another fun oriented command, the lemmings countdown ;)

    Community Buzz:

A new tourney is starting very soon!
There will be two tournaments running simultaniously, one dedicated to players from Europe, one for players from North America. However, you can only play in one tournament at the same time.
The signups will be open for 2 weeks. They will be closed on Sunday, September 7th. Forum thread
Tournament site (big thx for [-z-] for the new site template :)

EDIT at Mon Sep 08, 2008 12:10 am:
Signups have been closed! The tournament begins!

*HxC*Cuizinier has started a frag compilation movie, be sure to check out the trailer here (2shared) , and his forum thread about the movie.

    Frag of the Month
A new month, a new Frag of the month contest is avaiting your frags to be shown! Don't be shy, the first one to win the FOTM trophy was a poorly aimed Nex shot, so I'm pretty much think you can do better ;) Show us your FOTM for September, and watch others' contributions!. And while at it, don't forget to vote on the FOTM for August!

    Editing and Map releases:
When it comes to serious player modelling, you can count on torus, has made a Dalek robot model (
EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!). Too bad, he hasn't posted the donwload link yet, but you can get a sneak-peak of his work following this thread.
On mapper grounds, it seems like sev is at it again, now he works on his first CTF map, which he calls Cleft Village. WIP, screenshot goodnes can be found here.
For full map releases, we've got 10 new maps to blast our beloved oppenents to fleshy gibs, and these are:
    Never and Laboratory by Sepelio
Whizard - some Halo homage by [-z-]
Extreme Fight and other little easy maps by [uc]MaStEr
[Your daily q3 map][15] Fingers - Meatball Grinder by our mapper hero, Strahlemann

OMG, WTF, I didn't know about this video! Yes, I've left out the porto gun, and a lot more (eg. Tenshihan's sounds, community project reports like the fthird thousand beerz etc.), but it was very late in the night yesterday when I posted this.
Btw. as I've written in the article, we need more people. So please, in case anybody finds some interest in helping me on this issue, pm me!

  • Well not to forget the 'new/old' MinstaNex.. the previous Nex gun model is making a comeback and will play the role of the 'one-shot-one-kill' gun. Along those lines g_instagib is now gone, use g_minstagib 1, g_use_ammo 0 instead.
Also the rocketlauncher got nerved a bit as was often request.. WE STILL NEED PEOPLE TO TEST IT THOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Same goes for the crylink.. sofar most people said its fine now, one reported back its a snowfake gun now.. PLEASE TEST!! (lazy dog or galts are updated almost daily with development versions..)

Server admins can now also stop a running vote with 'sv_cmd vote stop'.
The clientside HUD can be customized quite nicely to display more or less info (like caps, frags, kills, deaths and such..), also as already mentioned effects like rain, snow, the hook are now purely clientside and make nexuiz use less network bandwitdh on such maps.

Dedicated servers now also use a 1minute warmup phase to help everyone get a clean start (map loadtimes, download times) and maybe to also do some balancing..

I also moved the topic to Nexuiz - News, which seems more like it :)

  • How can I get in on testing?

FWIW, I think that nerfing the rocket launcher is a HUGE mistake. It's a rocket launcher after all. It should be incredibly powerful. If there are too many rockets flying, then map designers need to think about the fact that they are placing too many weapons in easy to reach spots. The rocket launcher is a very unique weapon and to nerf it is going to make it akin to a slower-fire Hagar. Noobs will ALWAYS complain that a certain weapon keeps killing them. They are noobs. I have seen too many good games ruined when people cry about getting killed and the developers nerf the weapons to the point that everyone is basically running around with a pellet gun. That isn't any fun. Part of the fun of this game is the feeling of power that the weapons give you. Don't take that away. Anyways...enough babbling. It was perfect as it was and I hope that the nerf isn't permanent.

As for the Crylink, YES a slight nerf there is a very good thing. Not too much, but that thing is insanely powerful as it currently stands.

I looked at the vid of the portal gun. Is this going to be a standard weapon? It's interesting, but I'm a bit worried that it is going to completely destroy the dynamic of most maps. Specially in CTF games. We'll see I guess. Other than that, my only advice on it is to come up with new "portals". They look pretty bland as is. How about using a flat animated decal with some particles like in the real game Portal? Would look much better I think.

Anyways...thanks for the news update and keep up the awesome work. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I own UT3, TF2, Q3A, UT2004 and others. Nexuiz is the best of all of them by quite a large margin. You guys have done a beyond impressive job with this game. The movement, the graphics, the weapons...they are all a perfect balance of all the games that inspired Nexuiz, with a healthy dose of originality. I've since uninstalled ALL of my other FPS games. That's how much I like it.

I like the idea, but ffs I think it should be tested on some servers for a while, but i wouldn't like to see it incorporated into the regular game.
perhaps a Porto server mod typ thingie :?:

Looks like fun, it's amazing what this engine can do, it's the little engine that could.

One thing i would "maybe" like to see is rockets, bullets, etc.. going through portals, but it may really screw up some maps the more I think of it, but I remember this was done in Duke Nukem 3D and it seemed to work well.

  • While rockets and other projectiles going through portals would be neat, I think its a really really bad idea. Imagine what would happen to the bases in Facing Worlds.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

  • Well, there are a few test servers running (i know of .de Greens, lazy dog and galts) basicly you can join with 2.4.2 and will download some extra files you need. Of course stuff like engine fixes or the new menu can't be downloaded like this so you will miss out some of the changes but at least the new weapon settings and such can be tested.

Beside i really think people should test the new settings before complaining, given the complains about the RL were not by noobs but some of the more advanced players and the changes were not as huge. Still, please TEST the RL and the crylink and report back!

The Port-O-Launch is more intented for the new race mod or special maps that include it explicitly. Guess its more fun to put a map similar to portal in the singleplayer campaign then in multiplayer games :). But the portal is just stable for a while unless its used regulary and by default each player just gets one shot, both of which might be interesting for teamplay.

The new portals are special and different from teleporters but with the new version you can make own portals to use instead of the teleporters so you can also shoot rockets through..

  • Well, the port-o-launch is only available if the mapper placed it... or the server admin sets up weapon replacement (like I did, 20% of the Nexes become Port-O-Launches on my server).
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

    g_weaponreplace_7 "7 7 7 11 10"

    then 60% of Nexes (7) stay Nexes, 20% become MinstaNexes (11), 20% become Port-O-Launches (10)
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save

Actually it's spam most likely. This guy, and the one in 'NEW releases: Get informed while it's still HOT!!!' posted the same url to a same site. I deleted that spam url but left these cryptic messages.
Actually, scratch that. This/These guys have been making multiple posts, trying to hide the link with the background color of the new theme and making suddle spam links to crap sites. Been deleting these posts as he starts to get on my nerves.

A common phenomena is that they always quote some post to make it seem more natural. You're not fooling anyone! Peh.
