  • Please get the 2.5 into the Ubuntu repository. It's still showing 2.4.2-1. That would help upgrade players that otherwise might not get round to it.

    Thanks!

Thanks for that, I just noticed it's 600+MB so SF isn't the best choice for me right now :)

I think ubuntu just uses the debian packages.. we have a guy on irc packing up nexuiz for debian but it usually takes a few days for the package to be done and integrated into debian/sid.. i'm not sure how long it takes for it to be in ubuntu then..

  • I made the getdeb (playdeb) guys aware of the release for whatever that is worth. I'll post an update if I get one.

  • Played on 2.5 server today with some random noname people.

One of them complained about how slow 2.5 is and that he's going back to 2.4.2.

    Says something huh?

On a side note, I give you this: new antilag = aimbot :) It is great

Like every release, you get people saying, "OMG <this release> is crap, I'm going back to <the previous release> because I'm so important!!!"

Look at facebook every time they update :-P

  • For most people 2.5 should not be slower.. of course there are always some machines/setups/drivers that might dislike some of the changed settings. If people really think they can judge a game after 5 minutes without even trying to investigate the problem (which for sure are fixable in 90% of those cases) just takes himself too serious. Besides trying to find out what causes the problem might also help others that could run into the same problem.

Like i know at least one guy that gets crashes on "windows xp, mobile intel chipset family 965". What helped was disabling the texture compression.. Maybe if there are enough people with that problem and after reevaluating the memory usage the compression can be disabled again. Currently its active because some textures got larger and can lead to performance problems on 128mb graphic card without the compression. But of course thats still better then bad drivers crashing the game..

*edit: slight typo, its 128mb cards*

  • Nice release guys. This looks real solid now.

(And yes, there is always people resisting any changes, even if the changes are for the good).

  • From what I've seen so far, FPS fell for everyone. For me it fell around 30% - from ~180 to ~130. Kojn said his pc now gives him 30 fps at most. :(

I have gained a lot of fps in 2.5. It runs so smoothly it's scary. And last I played kojn (two days ago) he said it was rather smoothly for him as well compared to the other version he had (dunno if it was 2.4.2 or SVN), and that he gained at least 5 fps.

  • It seems we should make a list with gpu/cpu to find where is the clue (why some people gain fps and why some people lose). I, personally, started to lose and reported this several months ago while testing.

  • Since I played 2.5 now 2 days, I can only thank the developners. The added features like the tourneymod with fullbright skins, new sounds and the improved smooth gameplay. These were all things I missed in the last version and you added them all. Great work!

I wish I had better video card :(
I get ~15 FPS many times (and sometimes even worse) with Nexuiz 2.5 on lowest settings and 800x600, but since there works "r_showsurfaces 3" and it's usable and there I get > 100-120 FPS mostly I don't complain ( too much ;-) ).
My card is ATI Radeon 9600 256MB AGP with open source drivers, P4 3GHz, 1GB RAM @ Kubuntu 9.04 - on 8.10 there was about the same performance.

Once more, great work you do with this game.

  • xeros use fglrx. Open source ones do not support 3D acceleration.

I can't use fglrx now in new distributions - the last version of fglrx supporting my card doesn't support xserver 1.6.0.
Btw. open source (radeon) driver supports 3d acceleration but it's slow in games (but it's much better than flgrx in desktop effects, and video and it's more stable.
I'm waiting for 'radeon-rewrite' branch and Gallium3D to stabilize...

  • Big thanx for the new Nexuiz version. It's an awesome update and it runs waaay better than 2.4 on my machine. (HP 530 Laptop, 2x1,6Ghz, 2GB RAM, onboard graphics @ 1280x800 and medium effects)

  • Esteel - do you know if anything was done with the way the meshes are rendered?

Here is an idea that might cause performance increases for high end cards, but hurt low end cards, because I ran into it during CRX dev - if DP is rendering the meshes with GL_TRIANGLES rather than ordering the vertices and using GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP/FAN, it'll have a nice improvement for newer cards, but for older, it majorly impacts performance. Our solution was to add in legacy support, and defer to that when users would click on the lower presets, since generally anyone using lower settings would be those with older cards.

For me, 2.5 performs very well on "ultra" on a NV9800GTX, which btw, cost under 150 USD right now.

  • Just registered to thank Dhraakellian for posting that torrent! BitTorrent is the ideal method for distributing something as big as Nexuiz, especially in cases where everyone's trying to download the latest version. I'm really surprised there aren't links to torrents from the download page.
