Updates On Your Favorite Open Source First-Person Shooter

    Introduction:

Nexuiz News is a new project dedicated to keeping the Nexuiz community informed about Nexuiz development and activity within the community. The basis of Nexuiz News is our website www.nexuiznews.com, set up and maintained by Dokujisan. We have a team of reporters and reviewers updating the website with a constant stream of high level Nexuiz Newscasting.

    Categories:

We have already established a basic collection of categories for on our site, though not every category has a dedicated reporter yet.

Articles are written about various aspects of Nexuiz code development. Of course we report about interesting new features in the development version itself, but also about the Darkplaces engine and mods that are being developed for Nexuiz.

In the Community category we talk about interesting new developments in the area of new Nexuiz servers, Ladders and Tournaments, clan activity and just about anything else noteworthy that has to do with the Nexuiz player community.

The Content category reports about newly created and released content, like maps, models and sounds. For example, every month there is a roundup of all the maps that were released in the month before.

In the Regions category there is news about specific developments and activity in your own geographical area. We currently have three areas defined for this category: Europe, North America and Australia.

You can also follow the Nexuiz SVN Submit log directly on our website, we are currently looking into a way for reporters to add comments to this on our website. We think this would help the community understand new changes better and help discussions about these changes stay on track.

    The Team:

These are the people already involved in this project:

    Nexuiz News Project Team:

Dokujisan - project co-leader, website admin and article reviewer
MrBougo - project co-leader, IRC channel admin, article reviewer and reporter (Development and Mods)
Pavlvs - project co-leader, article reviewer and reporter (development)
PinkRobot - project co-leader, article reviewer and reporter (maps and general community)

    Nexuiz News Reporters Team:

ai - Community and Content (Models/Maps)
    C. Brutail - Content (Models/Maps)
    esteel - Development
    fisume - Community (Clans/Tournaments/Ladders/Servers)
    GreEn'mArine - Development and EU Community (Clans/Tournaments/Ladders/Servers)
    morfar - Announcements and Development
    nifrek - US Community (Clans/Tournaments/Ladders/Servers)
    shaggy - AU Community (Clans/Tournaments/Ladders/Servers)

If you want to join the team as a reporter, join our IRC channel (details below) and ask. Some areas are already very well covered by the current contributors but in certain areas we are still lacking. For example, we could still do with reporters for the following subjects:

      news about the darkplaces engine

sound development (reports about game music and new in-game action sounds)

    IRC Channel:

Our IRC channel is #nexuiz.news and is set up at irc.quakenet.org. If you have ideas for the project as a whole, the website, subjects to cover or if you would like to become a contributor, the best thing you can do is to join the channel and make your ideas and wishes known.

  • Awesome stuff!

Someone should change the News link on www.nexuiz.com so that it point to this! :)

  • A link on Nexuiz.com would be great for us but I'm not too sure it should replace the News page that is there now. Those are the official announcements/news items by Alientrap regarding Nexuiz and NexuizNews.com.

Maybe the current News page could be turned into an Announcements page on a new link and the News link pointing to Nexuiznews.com?

  • right now it is not a very consistent state of communication on the blog.
basically it is the information on the blog's covering page versus 'good info'.

Congratulations to FruitieX for winning the Frag Of The Month competition for the month June. He held off Dave for this win.

    The winning frag:
    » PinkRobot's blog Read more

There is no sign or bette: Image on what is going on at all. Okay, Users *should* know that clicking -read more- gives them more, but they don't.

give them a visual clue first, like a screenshot fo the image (to the video or demo).

    Mapping

These are all the maps that were released in July.

    New Capture The Flag Maps:
    » PinkRobot's blog Read more

why not show images of the mentioned maps first, on front page?

This is the main problem of your nice news blog.
your editors seem not to be aware of what is shown on front and shown after a click on 'read more'.

Please tell them how they can have things show up on main page and what is not; and also which may show up after a click, so they can actively think of it, and structure their text for it.

inconsistence is the main problem in my eyes ;-/

    and again:
the line "And finally, here is the winning frag:" should really deliver the winning frag, not just point to a page on which you may find the link to the video of the winning frag or not i stretch i that much on purpose yes haha you rabbit hah hah ho

Really? I'd say the main problem was a complete lack of dedication by anyone except me after the first three weeks or so. Some good posters got burnt out really quickly. Sure it was a bit fail, right from the start. But if something is not running when it hits the ground, you need to kick it a couple of times to see if it will go.

Anyway, that's why I stopped posting after July, I didn't intend nor desire to be the main driving force behind Nexuiz News at all (what was it, ten straight posts without anyone else posting in between?). I also have a serious lack of time to do anything at all lately, most of my time is dedicated to making enough money to make it through another month unscathed. If there is some time left at the end of the day I tend to spend it jabbering on irc for a bit, there are some people there that make me laugh quite a bit.

Shit I should be working now instead of writing this.

When this current shitstorm I'm in is over, I would be willing to pick up the project again, but only if I could manage to get control over the whole site. Admin account, access to the server (or have it transferred to a server of my own). But the thing is that the current site admin and server owner has told me he is not interested in the project anymore. My attempts to have the site transferred to me have gone unnoticed or unanswered up til now. I would still very much appreciate to get this done, but I don't want to annoy that person any more either.

I still own the domain by the way.

    No clue.

As admin the first thing I would change would be to make whole articles appear on the front page. Or at least show some more content of the actual post, instead of loads of whitespace.

Those didn't go unanswered. I said "ok that can be done" and then I didn't hear from you anymore. The most reliable part of this site has been me, so don't act like I'm lagging. I'm always available. I'm always on IRC every single day. I am always accessible. If anything needed to be changed, I could be available to make the change.

As far as the blog features, defining what gets shown on the front page and what gets shown when you click on the blog entry, that is definable per entry and the editors would be the ones who would make sure that happens properly.

As far as leaving comments on blog entries, the idea was that we would use the forum for conversation and the blog entries would have links to forum threads. This would be better than having separate conversations on the blog and conversations on the forum. It's best to have it in one place.

The blog entries could be presented better. More images. Better formatting. All of that rests on the shoulders of the editors.

I think the main issue with this news site is that it is not part of the main alientrap site, so nobody even knows it exists. This thread wasn't a great way to announce it. The domain name isn't even in the title. It should say "New site: NexuizNews.com"

So since the site doesn't get much attention, contributors lost interest and stopped contributing. That almost changed when -z- suggested to pull in RSS feeds from NexuizNews.com into the nexuiz.com news page. But that idea got shot down by Div0 because he doesn't like that shaggy would be a contributor (even though we have an editor workflow in place).

What?? How can you say "no clue"? You were there when we had this conversation. Was I just talking to myself?

It would be a mistake to have the full blog entry appear on the front page by default. We had discussed having some pretty long and involved posts (like overviewing the latest map releases). If each post appeared 100% in full view on the frontpage, that would take up too much space and it wouldn't look right.

  • One more thing, because the criticism of this project hits a nerve with me...

This project stemmed from the developer blog idea that I suggested. Remember that?
    http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=3619

Well, that idea was for the blog to be "official" and not some grass roots thing supported only by the community and separated from the Alientrap site.

After I spent some time pushing the idea, finally Pinkrobot said, "why don't we do it ourselves? After all, this is open source". Well, this is the reason why not, because unofficial projects are at a major disadvantage. That is the #1 problem with all projects for Nexuiz. The Alientrap team doesn't focus on anything outside of programming, so those projects remain the responsibility of community members and so those aspects of Nexuiz remain neglected. That limitation has always held Nexuiz back.

I've always criticized Nexuiz for this, ever since I first appeared in this community over 3 years ago. Useful projects should be made official and they should recruit community members. Such projects should be a part of the Alientrap/Nexuiz umbrella, and be accessible from the Alientrap/Nexuiz website.

I agree, and well again I would be glad to do the "developers blog" if it is e.g. weekly or something like that.
