  • It saddens me to see some mis-information being said, or things being taken out of context and otherwise skewed.

I share halogene's opinion here and wouldn't mind to hear what part of the discussion includes misinformation or what things were taken out of context.

Thats basicly the fault of everyone who signed the contract. You totally ignored everyone even the developers and now you you are wondering about such a response and that informations are taken out of context. THATS JUST NARROW MINDED!!!!!!

Kedhrin wrote:I can say that we did have a great GDC. The response was awesome. I can also firmly state we did talk about the open source version of Nexuiz to everyone we met. LordHavoc and Vermeulen can vouch for that as well.

somehow i dont believe that, that would take tthe attention from your project. No company would that. Well Vermeulen gives a fuck about the community, over 4 years he did nothing and gave the development to people who want to care about the game.

Kedhrin wrote:I'll try to start responding more when things settle but right now we're extremely busy and have to stay focused with as little stress as possible to ensure we create the best product we can. I think you guys would be very excited to see some of the things we are bringing to this version of Nexuiz.

Why do you try to sell use your nexuiz? we are pc gamer community, which mean not many people own a console. Also why do you constantly say ' I think you guys would be very excited to see some of the things'? This is boring !!! show us something, which is pc releated and useful for us. I DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR MARKETING BULLSHIT!!!

  • Anyway, since there obviously is no interest on behalf of Alientrap nor IllFonic to work together with the Nexuiz community, the core developers decided to fork. I am sorry to see what happened to the name Nexuiz that I myself have promoted quite some time. But given the circumstances I, too, fail to see any alternatives to forking.

I am very exited about the new project which is called Xonotic and I truly believe, that people around here will be very excited about what Xonotic is bringing to the gameplay of the Nexuiz community's favorite FPS. In fact, I am confident much more people around here are getting much more excited about Xonotic than about console Nexuiz.

If you haven't, visit www.xonotic.org for more infos on the worthy successor of Nexuiz!
<Community>: Why was the name "Nexuiz" licensed to IllFonic in a way that allows IllFonic to use the name without any suffix or subtitle for a commercial console game?

  • Xonotic? Oh, man. You're still on time to give some more thinking to the new name. :)

The name is staying, the process we took and brainstorming we did gave us the result that Xonotic would be the ultimate name possible. Check the FAQ page on Xonotic.org to explain how we arrived at it.

  • Seen this on ./ and decided to just have a personal opinion. This is not the first time or the last time we will see something like this, its just capitalism. Being someoneone who has played this game is sad to see what looks to be a hostile takeover. I feel for the community, All the dev's and map makers who have put so much time into this wonderful game feels like they have had the rug pulled out from under them. There may be more to this story than what i have read but im going to maybe point this out from a commerical devs view.

Huge user base, the name is well known (hense why they want the name more profit and initial sales) A game that has already met a maturity level of code so less work would be involved. This allows for quick modification and additions as 90% of the work has already been done by the community. Can be turned into a huge profit if done correctly. Console gaming. Unfortunatly this community is getting huge , especially with this type of game. They turned this around quickly and have it ported over already. The reason for closed source? Could be because of the console license. Im not sure if there are opensource games on such platforms.

My biggest issue with this is , the work of so many devs that developed not only for the passion of the game, but also for it being opensource. They gave time out of their lives to put into this. Now here is a thout that im not 100% sure on because i believe NDA's were in order for this transaction to happen. We already know the owner and 1 major dev from here is being paid in 1 way or another. What about the other devs? From what ive read it looks as if they have been contacted and given up rights to what they contributed. Maybe there was a bonus in there for such, free game? free console? A good idea would be a percentage of the profits from the commerical sales. This would also include the map makers that were included in the commerical release. I feel the opensource devs and community def didnt get a slice of the pie (i might be incorrect majority of this is all speculation).

Does the console version appeal to me? Being on the console doesnt but what happens to the game does, alot of the stuff they add will not be able to come back to the real version of nexuiz. There might have been a deal with the engine dev that any base mods needs to come back to the source version.

i might add more later, work is almost over :)

p.s. this is friendly conversation , maybe a lil rant but more of a relization of why it happened. I will prol post a constructive critism post regarding the console game once i read some more.

this article shows pretty good how illfonic talks about nexuiz

a formerly freeware PC shooter built on the Quake 1 engine that has been revitalized by a small independent team to be a multiplayer online console shooter for later this year.

No, it shows how Gamespot talks about Nexuiz. They know "Nexuiz (PC)" and if they feel "Nexuiz (PS3)" is a revitalization of it... well, their opinion.

  • I am getting rather annoyed by all this bashing going on, here and on irc.
What has happened has happened and there has been a revolution of sorts.
This is a thing that had to happen to maintain the integrity and self respect of the project.
    ...
There is NO POINT AT ALL in burning bridges.
    ...
Both projects can move on positively from this point and continue to work together.
Whether they do or not is up to us.
This feels like a make or break time for Xonotic/Nexuiz, lets not throw the baby out with the bath water.
    ...
I'm fairly certain that, to date, there are no "Illfonic servers", someone please correct me if I am wrong.

  • From my part, dont want to hear (again) explanations from Illfonic, they were very clear (they must create a faq to end with the same questions over and over)

I want to hear about the development and things that they think that can improve Nexuiz (all of them)

Ans a good fork is always welcome (not an upset fork, that always end in nothing) and i think that they will make a good job too (will try it when reach a more evolved stage)

They are 3 now, a commercial, a main and a fork. That is normal for every project, and is common to see the GPL forks merged on the main after some time, benefits for all on the future

he just want to take out his map, to do that must release it in non gpl format i guess (can change the license on new versions of the map)

ps: got bbcode off, dunno why...

OK, I meant: all changes they'll make on Darkplaces Engine (rendering features - like reflection, shadows- physics, ragdolls, etc.) will be released under GPL license or they can avoid this passage and make changes closed source?
