Anything to do with Zymotic here

  • Hi,

I'm quite new into making music ... and to be honest with you, I don't know how zymotic should sound or feel, but I tried to make some music for a shooter game (originally inspired by doom).

It's only some loops without much suspension and stuff... but if you like it (or only like Document9 ) I could try to work on more stuff.

Tell me what you think of it, I really would to do more stuff for games... maybe I even will get better. ;)

edit: sorry, I thought that Zymotic is going to be released as open source in some time ...
If you're interested in putting that kind of music into nexuiz, please tell me so! If you would like to have stuff like this in Zymotic it's ok also... and if you think that this music sucks, tells me so as well ( and please why) ;)

  • heh I found this funny:

Not to discourage you or anything but I think it sounds awful. Maybe it's the synth you're using.

I'd also recommend using LMMS if you're using linux.

  • yeah, music is always a question of taste...

The sound is really crazy, so I can imagine that it sounds awful to you.

I am using Reason, which is probably much better than lmms ...

But I ain't the only one who likes the sound of Document 9 ( at least there are some more people I know who like it as well) ... so maybe another one will like it.

Just write back. (even if you don't like it  )

  • They all sound kind of midi-ish.

  • They do show potential, however here's some criticism -
    1. The beats sound very inconsistent and off.
    2. The synth sounds would be good for ambient or introductory clips, but entire songs based around those short loops gets old fast. A lot of variation can be added with other samples (different synth sounds, little ooh/aah voice clips, etc.) layered on top. Currently the shallow layering makes them very repetitive.
    3. Check your pacing - these are very slow for an FPS :) And also make sure that when you do other samples (as mentioned in #2) you don't have them overstay their welcome. A cool sounding sample can become an annoying sample once looped too many times!

  • I already did some sounds for nexuiz yesterday and I want to do more music for games in the near future... Thanks for your support, your answers really helped me to make my vision clearer.

ps: about the pace... I really like slow music, when everything around you is hectic ... that's why I did it that way

  • I don't know what it is, but I think it's the syncopation, it feels like it's missing beats all over, but if you sped it up, and cut out the bass track, it would be perfect for nex, and if zymotic is going to be tacticall, it should be quieter, less drum-ish, and have a bass riff dominating the song. I have a mac, so I use garageband for things like this, midis are actually pretty easy. Finale notepad can do very similar things, but its synth range is really limited.

Just keep trying, try to get beats together with their counterparts, or you will sound like you have two different pieces being played at once.

'MIDI-ish' is not necessarily a negative property; it all depends on the harmonization of the melody

None of the following is intended to offend

With these loops, it appears that you've never learnt an instrument, let alone theory; I'll comment on each of the samples individually.

    Document9
      -Absolute discord.
-The background rhythm is an unnecessary addition.

    Beat29
-Melody unexpectedly jumps to non-harmonic tones.
-The rhythm isn't appropriate for the melody.

    Beat31
-The question & answer phrase begins with a strange imperfect chord.
-The question & answer phrase doesn't end with a perfect chord.
-The syncopation causes the the sustained note to 'stutter' as it waits for the rhythm to finish repeating itself.

  • This thread kind of inspired me, I'm working on slow, "secret-agent" type music, like more bass versions of yours, I'll have something posted as soon as I have a working demo song.

Making it all in Garageband :)

  • iSuck,

How are you getting on with your music? Do you have anything for us to sample?

  • Carp (yes, carp)
I haven't gotten back to that for a while. I had a personal Blender renaissance this month, and was very busy with that.

Yah, right now it sounds like the M:I theme. I want to add horns to make it sound more like 007, or like the TF:2 soundtrack.

Not for commercial use without my permision !!

I can customize it , add solo and special fx.
Suggest me what type of music you need and I will create it.
