  • Hi with the new version on nexuiz there does not seem to be the option to turn on public server and create your own name for the server like in the old version.
    I might be missing something here and i don't won't to use the dedicated option.
    Before i just whent to create then selected public added some bots messed with the misc options and away i went ,now i can only see it as myusername server and no 1 can find it?

  • Well normally those 'gui servers' are on slow connections that might have trouble with more then a few players from the net and they usually are fast to be gone again so it does not really make sense for them to be visible in the server list. If you just want to play with friends simply tell then your IP and that they should open the ingame console (shift-escape) and enter
    Code: Select all
    connect IP
    or
    Code: Select all
    connect IP:PORT
    to connect to your server.
    However you can still overwrite the setting for the server list via console.. but as i think its not really a good idea you will have to search the example server.cfg to find the right variable :)

  • The default port is 26000, you don't need to specify it with the connect command (if you don't change it).

  • Could there be a more obvious way to create a lan game? because it's a little bit confusing when playing on a lan. You have to search the server on the internet server list, and then find out which is the right (because you can't set the name, and there is no indication which one is a lan server)

  • Just manually connect as i mentioned below..
    And on the other hand if the server is on LAN and on the default port 26000 it should show up on the server list even if nonpublic iirc.. And thanks to LAN it has a VERY low ping, so just sort the server list for ping?

  • sure, but still confusing. Why not just mark it as a lan server? if it's that easy to detect it, it should be easy for nexuiz too.
    Just a suggestion, because last time i played nexuiz on a lan, everyone loved the games, but was thinking that it just isnt very professional, because of such small details.

  • :-) no they never said bad, just that the little details are missing (but they love it and we play it quite often and for hours).

    I on my part don't think it's realy a problem, i just wanted to tell you the opinion of some windows gamers.

    By the way, why does the Game not know if it's a lan or a internet server? Because if i understand this right, the lan servers are not published on the master server, but are discovered by broadcasting in the lan, so the information comes from 2 different sources, that should be detectable?

    And sorry if you got my comment wrong, i realy love that game, and after many years without gaming it's the first game that brings me back to playing games.

  • The problem is in the network protocol.

    LAN servers never are queried directly, but a SINGLE query is sent out as a broadcast on the network.

    Internet servers however are listed from the master server, and then queried one-by-one.

    The query response packets however are exactly the same.

    On a first glance, one would think "okay, so servers that have been explicitly queried before are Internet servers, the others are LAN servers"... but it can always happen that you get a response from another IP than you sent the query to (happens with some routers in some networks), or that you get a "stray" response that was intended for someone else (happens all the time in the internet, due to many ISPs using dynamic IPs). And these would erroneously appear as LAN servers.

    Instead, we'd need an extra field in the query and in the response, so the engine knows which type of query it was. And adding that is not that simple, and it would show all previous versions as internet servers, even if on the LAN.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

    You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

    I see. But would that be a problem? I mean, usualy when playing in a lan game, everybody has the same version, and if not, well then i just shows up as a internet game. I don't think that this realy is a problem.

    But of course there are more important things to code in nexuiz (well.. not realy, since nexuiz nearly got everything it needs, so this isnt realy true ;-) )

  • Wow...
    Well, that killed the game for me pretty much :x

    Well, we'll be downgrading to 2.3 again, but was that really necessary?

    That's the way it is in every online game, isn't it? Everybody can create a game. .. You can always see the ping so I don't know what the problem is here.

    I usually play LMS and KH with friends. There are no LMS or Keyhunt servers except for the "new and large maps" - And if the maps don't kill the game, the bots do.

    I've hosted Keyhunt games with 20 players, and we didn't get any lag. In fact, if I or a friend of mine hosts a game, it is usually the best available - probably because we're on the same provider.
    And even if some private games lag - you always see the ping, so just don't get in!

    I hate to just come in to complain about a game I love, but this was just a really bad decition IMHO.
    This also kicks Nexuiz off the potential LAN - games list.

    whyowhyowhyowhyowhy!!

    Did anybody request this?
    How did this happen?
    Who thought this was a good idea?

    What do you expect this to change? 2.3 is NOT different in anyway in this regard!

    Please try the hotfix available in the forum or wait for 2.4.1.. there was a ugly bug in the movement code that makes it appear jerky, but only for some fps values together with connection speed thats why it was hard to find and fix.

    Honestly i have no idea what you complain about.. if you want to play lan, just do so, have a server running port 26000 and it will be found on lan and appear on the serverlist even if its sv_public 0..
    Or if you really wanna run several servers also run your own master server and make the server and client know about this one..

    In 2.3 you just check the "public" checkbox, and your game is available from anywhere for everybody... WAN or LAN.

    Right, so were is your problem?

    That I can't play the game like I used to play it... I would have to create my own server to play a decent keyhunt game.

    Please try the hotfix available in the forum or wait for 2.4.1.. there was a ugly bug in the movement code that makes it appear jerky, but only for some fps values together with connection speed thats why it was hard to find and fix.

    There seems to be some MAJOR misunderstanding here. I don't have any lag problems.
    I'm just pondering over the reasons why the "public" option was removed from the "create game" tab under "multiplayer"... Which disables every normal player to create his own game - which is especially bad for me and my friends, because we liked the game mostly for the different modes. I don't care so much for CTF, DM and Instagib.

    Honestly i have no idea what you complain about.. if you want to play lan, just do so, have a server running port 26000 and it will be found on lan and appear on the serverlist even if its sv_public 0..
    Or if you really wanna run several servers also run your own master server and make the server and client know about this one..

    I don't want to run "several servers"
    ... I just would like to use it the same way I did with 2.3.
    Apparently that is not possible anymore... So maybe it still works in LAN, but for the most part we were playing over the net, and if no other players can join in, this pretty much isn't very attractive anymore.

    So Nexuiz 2.3 remains my favourite online FPS, but I don't see why the ability for everyone to create public games was taken from 2.4.

  • It was just taken from the menu.. basicly most people that do it that way have no clue about what they are doing and and just wanna play with some bots. Also those people often also tend to have shitty router that just create problems when 'external' people try to connect. if people want to run a server to play with buddies its recommended to just use a dedicated server. See Nexuiz/Docs/server for how to do it.

    BUT If you still want to do it just do this before clicking on the start button: open the console with shift-escape and enter: sv_public 1

    Voila..

  • Ok, thanks... that should do... but I still don't understand what motivated that decision.
    What's the worst-case scenario? Most players play the same servers anyway, and if a private game comes along... ok, it might be set up in a weired way, and it might disconnect randomly, but all the regular players know what the reliable servers are, so...

  • Well, ok...
    Just two tiny problems...
    Many of the keyhunt maps we have are not in the Keyhunt list anymore.
    And changing map with chmap or vcall chmap kh_*
    doesn't work anymore. what's up with that?
    How do you load a map for keyhunt or LMS?

    And is it possible to give the server a more descriptive name than [Player]'s Nexuiz Server?
    If someone wants to play Rune... LMS, KH... they should have a way of finding us, no?

    That doesn't seem to do anything in the console.
    Could you be more specific?
    In 2.3 you just said "chmap kh_minimanq3" for excample and it loaded the minimanq3 pk3 in keyhunt mode. How do you do that now? And more importantly how do I put those into the maplist for a specific game mode... some of those maps - like miniman don't show up in the keyhunt list anymore.

  • I tried doing it with the dedicated server.sh now... the way the good lord intended us to - apparently.

    But it doesn't accept the name I choose in the server.cfg,.. it pretty much seems to be the same thing, just running as an independent program.

    Anyway... we'll just go back to 2.3
    It just isn't worth the hassle. 2.4 users can still enter, so no worries.

  • Specifying the mode right at g_maplist is indeed no longer supported. It was a really ugly hack that could lead to corrupt servers, was hardly used, made it harder for map authors to put up their map and as far as i know Nexuiz was the only game around to offer that feature.

    Morfar was half right with his stuff.. you now specify the gamemode you wanna play before you start the map but not in the way he said.. better use 'gametype ctf' for example to switch to ctf.

    Wow you can use irony.. i put up Nexuiz/Docs/server to help setup a dedicated server and thought every line in server.cfg was clearly commented but obviously its not and you found a better way for your self. Have fun with it and do not complain when someone finds a security hole in the old server and hacks yours.. (just one of the reasons to use uptodate servers..)

  • Well... I does look pretty straight foreward...
    Code: Select all
    hostname "LMS, KH(keyhunt), no bots, hook" // this name will appear on the server list

    The hostname is still "Oskar 669's Nexuiz Server"
    Code: Select all
    g_keyhunt 1     // key hunt

    The gamemode is Deathmach :?:

    Code: Select all
    g_grappling_hook 1 // set to 1 to enable the hook

    This is the only one that worked.

    Many people get this right... so the problem might be on my side... But all I'm trying to do is to play a game of Keyhunt once or twice a week, so this is already overkill.

    Anyway... If I'm the only one complaining... alright. I'm just hoping we'll get those features back with the next release.

    Don't get me wrong... I know you're doing this for no profit, and you've created one of the best balanced FPS's, and pretty much the only game I've been playing for the last year.
    But if 2.3 just works, and 2.4 does not, we'll stick with 2.3.

    For a LAN game, this is really not so great anyway. If we're playing LMS, and we want to play a game of CTF, we have to restart the server, and everybody has to log out and in again?
    Most of my friends prefer Q3 anyway, so this doesn't make the convincing easier.

  • well i tried with this server.cfg (i used the one that will end up in 2.4.1 so it looks a bit different then the one in 2.4 right now..) and it just worked.. played lms with the grapplinghook with the right name..

    I also was able to see my server in the serverlist although its sv_public 0 like you would wanna like for lans.. I just wonder, it had a REALLY high ping display but playing was fine. I wonder whats up with the display..

    And no people do not need to disconnect and you do not need to restart the server.. just type

  • I had the ping thing too... It said 9999 or something... once the first player joined it went down to 40.

    I'll try your config file... but apparently I moved some vital files while shuffling around the pk3's
    I'll just get the latest build then.

  • It works after I applied the hotfix.

    Now the name is set to the one I have in the server.conf, and I can change the game mode. It doesn't seem to accept kh though.

    However, it ignores the map list I put together (just loads the default maps) and people keep coming in even though public is set to 0. (I've only changed the map list and password from the server.cfg you posted.)

  • Strange, kh should work..
    if (t == "dm") return MAPINFO_TYPE_DEATHMATCH;
    else if(t == "tdm") return MAPINFO_TYPE_TEAM_DEATHMATCH;
    else if(t == "dom") return MAPINFO_TYPE_DOMINATION;
    else if(t == "ctf") return MAPINFO_TYPE_CTF;
    else if(t == "rune") return MAPINFO_TYPE_RUNEMATCH;
    else if(t == "lms") return MAPINFO_TYPE_LMS;
    else if(t == "arena") return MAPINFO_TYPE_ARENA;
    else if(t == "kh") return MAPINFO_TYPE_KEYHUNT;
    else if(t == "as") return MAPINFO_TYPE_ASSAULT;
    else if(t == "ons") return MAPINFO_TYPE_ONSLAUGHT;

    However i have no idea why you had to install the hotfix.. the server setup stuff was not changed, just the config file was reordered by me to be more logical and more readable.

    Is your g_maplist correct? its just the mapname now.. Like in the example:
    g_maplist "aggressor aneurysm basement basementctf bleach bloodprison bloodprisonctf bluesky darkzone dieselpower dismal downer evilspace farewell final_rage reslimed ruiner runningman_1on1remix runningman runningmanctf silvercity skyway slimepit soylent starship stormkeep strength toxic warfare"

    If you type g_maplist in the server console it will show you the value its currently set to.. maybe something is wrong with it

  • I didn't find a build of 2.4.1 and I don't really feel like compiling... so I tried the hotfix

    If I type g_maplist in the console while logged in, it shows me the default maplist, not the one that I have in the config file but the server always starts with 7mm towers - which isn't in either list.

    Code: Select all
    g_maplist "bluesky darkzone evilspace minimanq3 qdolphin"

    Other players can log in, but they see a black map (even if they have the map that is loaded)

    When I do "chmap ..." Nexuiz crashes on their side.
    They can also do "chmap" and it will change on their side, but nothing happens on my side. :|

    Of course this might be a problem with the hotfix...

    - I have the pk3's linked between the 2.3 and 2.4 folder with "ln -n" (I'm on linux)
    I can't imagine this causing a problem, but I thought I'd mention it.
