How do you believe Nexuiz should be distributed from now one?

Should Nexuiz come packed with NetRadiant as well?

Postby MirceaKitsune » Sun Feb 22, 2009 2:25 pm

I've been meaning to ask this for a while now, and given the fact 2.5 is getting close to being released I think this is the right time to think about it. Do you believe Nexuiz should be officially distributed with NetRadiant and possibly a terrain generator utility as well? Much like the UT series always came with Unreal Editor in them... of course if Radiant is allowed to be redistributed together with the game which I think it should be.

I think it would make things much more easy and encourage mapping a lot if a version of Radiant was included with the game too (NetRadiant would be the best I think). Also the terrain generator utility EasyGen would be something useful to have near NetRadiant, for those who make terrain maps generated from heightmap files. Users would then just install the game and open the editor whenever they wish to map, without having issues with getting Radiant separately and make sure they have an updated entities.def at all times. The game would also be a complete pack then... game + mapping utility which imho would be much better.

Radiant doesn't weight much in file size so I don't see any issue with having it with the game for a complete set. So what do you all think? Should Nexuiz 2.5 just come packed as the game only, the game + NetRadiant or the game, NetRadiant and a terrain generator utility like EasyGen?

You would also need packed GPL compatible tutorials, which are NONE.

Including the 'Radiant would render the universal binary moot, and require installation, in contrast to Nexuiz' portable capacity.

The 'Radiant should stay separate from the main distribution, less bug reports begin appearing in this forum.

NetRadiant requires no installation. Don't spread lies. It's just like Nexuiz a zip you can extract and run from anywhere (however, settings are saved to Application Data, but if that fails, you simply have to specify the nexuiz path again every time).

However, it is indeed a bad idea to include it as there appears to be no working OS X build for it yet.

On the other hand, it could very well be linked to from the official download page (even as direct download link).
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Yes, but there are no GPLed docs and without any tutorial it would be useless for starters (is it possible to link to those q3 arena/team arena docs existing on the web?). There is morphed's tutorial video, but is rather huge in comparison to those htmls.

what about ai's training videos?

http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=3334

Don't know about their licensing, but they are usable nontheless, aren't they? Unless recorded with some strangely licensed software that prohibits such thing, ai might even consider to release them under gpl (if he hasn't already).
<Community>: Why was the name "Nexuiz" licensed to IllFonic in a way that allows IllFonic to use the name without any suffix or subtitle for a commercial console game?

Don't think it would be pointless to include Radiant without a tutorial. There are many of them out there on the net... all I needed to do when trying to learn mapping in radiant was googling 'gtkRadiant tutorial' I remember. AI's tutorials could help though if they can be included with the pack in this case.

I still think Nexuiz would be much better as a game + map editor pack like the UT series, and it would also encourage mapping much more if everyone just has the editor automatically with the game, but maybe later someday if not now :)

Radiant is not in a good enough shape to bundle it with Nexuiz. We'd get tons of bug reports for all the KNOWN bugs in radiant or q3map2. Doesn't matter if GtkRadiant 1.4, 1.5, ZeroRadiant or NetRadiant, they're all insanely buggy (NetRadiant seems to have LEAST bugs though, especially in the map compiler, but on the other hand lacks any documentation as that part of GtkRadiant 1.5 is in the non-free Q3Pack).

The bundling of unrealED made unreal what it was... and unreal ed was 20 x more buggy than netradiant. By comparison netradiant is rock solid.

If the editor is bundled in a configured state for windows we will get more mappers as all they will have to do is open it up, make something, and hit compile. If they do file bug reports on the forum that are not relevant those reports can be deleted and the offending poster's ISP banned from the forum forever. It would really be a good idea to bundle the editor: win users cannot figure out how to install it correctly most of the time (none of my friends can). Please bundle it, it should increase the dev community of nexuiz by alot (first they map, then texture, then model, then maybe even code... but it's the mapping that hooks them in).

Bubbas q3 tuts are the best way of learning the editor I've found. It may be possible to ask him if he could gpl them.
