Nexuiz tested on low end PC

Postby C.Brutail » Sun Feb 18, 2007 2:26 pm

I got my poor old rig back to life, and I thought I'm gonna test Nexuiz on this little baby,
just to know, how well the game performs on an old rig like this. Here's the config:

CPU: 800Mhz Intel Celeron
Mobo: Elitegroup P6BXT-A+ Motherboard
256 Mb SD Ram, 100Mhz
GeForce2MX 100/200 (32Mb video Ram)

For OS I've chosen Debian Sid, with the latest stable kernel, 2.6.20. I've chosen linux becouse Nexuiz
performs generally better on linux. The graphics driver is the non-free Nvidia legacy driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631.
For the best performance, I've tweaked down all the effects, here's the config file I've used:

Code: Select all
cl_decals "0"
seta cl_nogibs "1"
cl_particles_blood "0"
cl_particles_quality "0.100000"
fov "115"
gl_picmip "7"
gl_polyblend "0"
r_coronas "0"
r_glsl "0"
r_glsl_deluxemapping "0"
r_shadow_gloss "0"
r_shadow_realtime_dlight "0"
r_shadow_realtime_world_shadows "0"
r_sky "0"
scr_conalpha "0.7"

The game looked very minimal on graphics with these setings, but at least playable on most maps.
There was one another thing wich with I've tried to boost FPS: replacing all the models with the "shocktrooper",
as esteel pointed out that that's the most lightweight model of all.
I've played all the deathmatch maps with two bots for 5 minutes. I've recorded a demo too from each match,
a link for the zip with all the demos can be found at the bottom of this comment.

THE INFOS BELOW HERE ARE DEPRECATED, BUT INTERESTING BENCHMARKS CAN BE FOUND http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopi ... 9173#19173 HERE :)

Here are the results:

dm_agressor
Rating::D :D :D :D :D
Timedemo results:
demo demos/dm_agressor.dem | commandline ./nexuiz-linux-686-glx | result 6171 frames 107.9110176 seconds 57.1860051 fps min/avg/max: 12.7477800/57.1860051/142.3092449

This was the best map of all, played realy nice on this rig. The only map from the 20 maps of Nexuiz that could get 5
smilies from me.

dm_aneurysm
Rating: NO SMILES FOR HERE
Timedemo results:

This map was awefull. Average fram is 18 here from the report of the benchmark log, but I'd say it was 10-15. Unplayable.

dm_basement

dm_evilspace
Rating: :D :D
Timedemo results:
demo dm_evilspace.dem | commandline ./nexuiz-linux-686-glx | result 6147 frames 342.1105912 seconds 17.9678740 fps min/avg/max: 1.4701794/17.9678740/211.1487952

This map is although fun, not realy suitable for this map. Only two points.

dm_runningman
Rating: :D :D
Timedemo results:
demo dm_runningman.dem | commandline ./nexuiz-linux-686-glx | result 6151 frames 319.5125991 seconds 19.2511970 fps min/avg/max: 1.1981659/19.2511970/116.0881288

Timedemo results:
demo dm_silvercity.dem | commandline ./nexuiz-linux-686-glx | result 6059 frames 535.9262431 seconds 11.3056602 fps min/avg/max: 1.0322155/11.3056602/128.2563661

This map doesn't even deserve a smily. Average fps 11. Not good at all, it's a pain to play on this map.

dm_skyway
Rating: :D
Timedemo results:
demo dm_skyway.dem | commandline ./nexuiz-linux-686-glx | result 6148 frames 337.2156541 seconds 18.2316566 fps min/avg/max: 4.0136001/18.2316566/142.2455183

This map has big problems, dunno why but I have major FPS hits on the main playing area. Not good for serious play.

dm_slimepit
Rating: :D :D :D
Timedemo results:
demo dm_slimepit.dem | commandline ./nexuiz-linux-686-glx | result 6137 frames 218.6229957 seconds 28.0711550 fps min/avg/max: 8.0287199/28.0711550/141.2417044

Not as I expected, this map is very good on my settings, I had a realy fun play on it. 3 points :)

dm_soylent
Rating: :D :D :D
Timedemo results:
demo dm_soylent.dem | commandline ./nexuiz-linux-686-glx | result 6157 frames 267.2590052 seconds 23.0375773 fps min/avg/max: 9.7830171/23.0375773/176.8083623

Tho I only had 23 FPS in general, this map was playable.

dm_starship]
Rating: :D :D :D
Timedemo results:
demo dm_starship.dem | commandline ./nexuiz-linux-686-glx | result 6170 frames 249.6455783 seconds 24.7150382 fps min/avg/max: 9.0578091/24.7150382/174.1247654

Starship is one of my favorite dm maps, and I was happy to see that the old little pc was capable to handle the map. With some FPS hits, the map is very fun to play.

dm_stormkeep
Rating: :D :D :D :D
Timedemo results:
demo dm_stormkeep.dem | commandline ./nexuiz-linux-686-glx | result 6154 frames 131.3957149 seconds 46.8356217 fps min/avg/max: 13.2343353/46.8356217/143.0823384

If dm_agressor is the etalon, this map should deserv 4.5 points. Very good FPS vise (and the map is very good too ;) ). Excellent.

dm_toxic
Rating: :D :D :D
Timedemo results:
demo dm_toxic.dem | commandline ./nexuiz-linux-686-glx | result 6167 frames 196.0738943 seconds 31.4524278 fps min/avg/max: 11.9691680/31.4524278/113.2897542

Especially when the pc needs to render the whole map, like when you're on the top of the centre building, it gets an FPS hit, but in general, playable.

dm_warfare
Rating: :D :D :D
Timedemo results:
demo dm_warfare.dem | commandline ./nexuiz-linux-686-glx | result 6177 frames 245.7062165 seconds 25.1397791 fps min/avg/max: 1.3059231/25.1397791/151.5353567

I thought Controlled warfare will be more playable, but it could only get 3 points.

These are the results of my test. There's one thing, I think I should have test, maybe to compile the engine from source for my rig, so it would be even more optimized. Oh well, maybe one day, I'll do that too, just to see, how much does that improve ;)
My filnal conclusion: I think the actual playable settings are a bit higher then this rig. I'd vote on a 1Ghz CPU and at least a Geforce3 card, the Gef2MX is very low for this game. I tried to play a little CTF too, but it was so horrible, I thought I won't include CTF in my test.

Nice testing thanks. Just a bit sad that some maps run really bad.

You might want to take a look at this post: http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?p=90#90
I mention a few variables at the end that can affect (or not) performance on some systems. This highly depends on the system..

Yeah those are really some nice improvements.. though only the average fps can be compared (as the min and max fps measurements have changed to do it similar to other games) but the average increased more then 100% on each map and on some almost 300%.
I'm just glad that noone thinks about the 'wasted' performance in older versions but is happy to have the improvements hehe :)

There was one another thing which with I've tried to boost FPS: replacing all the models with the "shocktrooper", as esteel pointed out that that's the most lightweight model of all.

How do I do this?

Does this work for network play or just single player?
