  • i wanted to start a discussion about the music... which is imo partly not in "the nexuiz-style". and i also wanted to ask for your opinions about the "nexuiz-music-style" i.e. what you think how nexuiz music should sound like.

for me a big problem is the big difference betweens the two "generations" of the nexuiz-music, the first from elysis, the second from blkrbt.

i'll write my opinions about the tracks here:

beast of insanity: a weird track. imo a bit to monotonous and short and not fitting to nexuiz. but the original concept is good.
brainsukker: good when i got used to it.
breakdown easy: thats one of the tracks which formed my nexuiz-music style. really good.
brokenlight: also a bit monotonous after a while. those e-guitars starting in 0:43 are good, but really monotonous. but the concept is really good.
    calling bogus: good.
    chaos fog: really good.
desert3: i don't like that. the violins are much too high-pitched. thats not music for nexuiz.
digital pursuit: well, afaik it's not used anymore.
    infight: good.
neuronal diving: really good, e.g. for space maps. it's not used often enough now :)
ninesix: the beginning sounds too much like rock, apart from that it's really good.
    northern lights: really good.
sixtyfour: really good. the violins are a bit to monotonous at the beginning.
sixtyfour revisited: awesome. really. the beat is great, the bass is great, everythings great. i thinks this also fits to space maps because it creates a... ambient.
stairs: the e-guitar doesn't fit really. ithis track is not so good, but not bad.
subcities: really good. i once played a match in a grey city map, and i think this track was played. it sounded like this track was made only for this map.
    thru the mirror: really good.

if you don't know how to access the tracks or how they are names, open /nexuiz/data/thebigpk3 with winrar (or maybe 7z) :) go to sounds, then cdtracks.

well, now it's your turn... what do you think about the music? about blkrbt vs elysis? did i make something terribly wrong and messed everything up? is there any new music upcoming/included after 2.5.2? what do you think nexuiz music should sound like? should i STFU because i don't know anything about good music? :D

    just write your opinions/thoughts.

  • It's not easy to determine the "Style of Nexuiz". :)

As a first-generation Nexuiz player i agree with You on the music. Running around on Oilrig, all alone, with Elysis playing in the background.... for me, that was Nexuiz. (1.0 is still available for download! ;) )
But the new generation, the new weapons, the new menu, have a power that wasn't available before. It's a new style and it makes sense, things change, we have to go with the times. i do miss the old style, but it was a bit too "Dismal". :P

PS: Much of the music available in Nexuiz (and from community maps) can be found at my old OUNS wikispace. (That should be a bit more comfortable than opening each map (or Nexuiz folder) seperately.)

Agreed except I don't even like the concept.

brainsukker: good when i got used to it.

    Mediocre.

breakdown easy: thats one of the tracks which formed my nexuiz-music style. really good.

    Good.

brokenlight: also a bit monotonous after a while. those e-guitars starting in 0:43 are good, but really monotonous. but the concept is really good.

Really good. The monotony is a little bit of an issue, but part of this is because you hear it everytime you start the game, not just on a particular map.

    calling bogus: good.

    Mediocre.

    chaos fog: really good.

Really good. One of the best atmosphere setters in the way its name implies.

desert3: i don't like that. the violins are much too high-pitched. thats not music for nexuiz.

Really good. The sax part is awesome.

    infight: good.

Good, I agree. I really wish the chords that come in were louder relative to the beat.

neuronal diving: really good, e.g. for space maps. it's not used often enough now :)

Damn straight, this needs to be used more. Really Good. One of the best in fact.

ninesix: the beginning sounds too much like rock, apart from that it's really good.

Jeez, when the hell is this used in the game, I don't remember this at all? Definitely good, and deserves a map.

    northern lights: really good.

    Good.

sixtyfour: really good. the violins are a bit to monotonous at the beginning.

Agreed on both. Really good, but violins are too monotonous.

sixtyfour revisited: awesome. really. the beat is great, the bass is great, everythings great. i thinks this also fits to space maps because it creates a... ambient.

Agreed, this is really good. Unfortunately I think it might have been removed for legal reasons of somekind.

stairs: the e-guitar doesn't fit really. ithis track is not so good, but not bad.

    Really Good.

subcities: really good. i once played a match in a grey city map, and i think this track was played. it sounded like this track was made only for this map.

    Poor. Bland.

    thru the mirror: really good.

Really Good. Fits Bleach perfectly too.

You didn't comment on the track "Creation", which is another one not used in the game for some reason. It is top notch I think, I don't understand why it isn't hooked up to a map yet?

    about blkrbt vs elysis?

I would like to see blkrbt' rely less on violins and e-guitar and the combination of the two.

I would like to see elysis' work rely less on random sound effects.

Both can sometimes get monotonous, it is just that blkrbt' songs are louder so that you notice this more while elysis' are so quiet in places you might not be aware there is music in the background. Both have some brilliant tracks and some mediocre ones.

what do you think nexuiz music should sound like?

Like the best examples already available plus some forms of electronic and classical music we haven't heard in Nexuiz yet. There's still room for expansion in the right direction in other words.

Amazing. This track gave me a good first impression of Nexuiz when I played Downer on the campaign mode. It also fits Bleach very well.

Why, those fit perfectly with the random explosions!

Personally, elysis' techno/industrial ambient music was essential in driving the atmosphere of Nexuiz' heavy metal/crete maps, early DM wouldn't have been the same without it.

Techno, Industrial and Ambient are the core of Nexuiz music, I agree.

It is just the specific implementation- too much reliance on using only textures (and beat) to carry too many of the themes over too many minutes of play time.

Elysis' songs that did not fall into this trap and make the game's soundtrack:

  • The older, tech style music was much more fitting I think. The new stuff is to much like orchestra or something.

  • i'm just upset that the official music hasn't changed much since 1.0, i know this because i have archived 1.0 through 2.5.1 on my hard disk. most of the sounds are still the same as is the official maps and other official content.

  • Thank you.

If Nexuiz would have changed much there wouldn't be much Nexuiz in Nexuiz anymore. But i think it changed alot! The menu theme from 1.0 by Parapraxis is now replaced, Elysis lost major domination points, etc....

But what i would like to see more is more custom sound packs, and that's up to the community.

  • Ahem!

To quickly speak in the direction I was going in with the music I made: The theme of the music I made for Nexuiz was made from the suggestions of people within the community, I first submitted a more electronic track which was never used since the people who listened to it felt the game needed something more organic, and hence my orchestral tracks, I then continued to make some more organic sounding music since it seemed to be what everyone wanted.

Originally my idea was to keep very close to the style of music that elysis made, which I felt had quite an underworld vibe to it, but made the other music to suggestions of what people wanted.

That being said, I'm not unhappy with my contributions, I think a lot of people like them, and that's why they got made, and got implemented. I just wanted to express where I was going with the music to the people who find that it doesn't fit, since I completely understand why people would think that.

  • I personally like the good mix of orchestra and electronic. As long as the music (regardless of style) doesn't suck then it should be able to be in the game. Some maps (like Soylent and Desert Factory) are better suited with the orchestra style while others are better suited to some frantic techno.

  • Talking about the first one here. The track is nice and I would like to use it as intro music. I love the background, the beat and music, and thoroughly enjoyed the song. I think the guitar could be reworked or something (sounds sporadic?), but other than that it's a nice piece.

It got taken out for being a GPL violation (author refused to give out source when asked for it - the sorry excuse was that it was in some weird Amiga format. When asked for that file or disk image anyway (as the GPL does not care if the program to edit the file is freely available), he never replied back).

ninesix BTW is still there, including source files. So that one is unlikely to get removed (in case samples in it are stolen, it can get rerendered using the project file we have).
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.
