  • Nexuiz 2.23 crashes my XP system every time I use offset mapping (1.5 did not) now the nexuiz20080227a build crashes. The SDL version works. It's noticeably faster.

  • Let me clarify:
Nex 1.5 basically never crashed (offset or no)
By Nex 2.3 enabling offset caused a crash
SVN Ver 20080227a now crashes even before the transparent Logo/Lading screen appears, my pc computer only switches resolutions then crashes.
    All this is for nexuiz.exe

nexuiz-sdl.exe works in the SVN ver for me (thank god!) but offset mapping still is an instant crash.

    Windows error details:
    AppName: nexuiz.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.0 ModName: msvcrt.dll
    ModVer: 7.0.2600.1106 Offset: 00033bce

  • Just tried Nexuiz 2.4 on Windows XP and a Radeon HD 3850 card. Both nexuiz.exe and nexuiz-sdl.exe work fine for me.

  • We need a backtrace of the crash, to find out what is the cause. Like, Dr. Watson's full output.

Or, you get OllyDbg, set it as primary debugger, click "Debug" when it crashed, and post a screenshot of the maximized OllyDbg window after the crash. It should also contain all the useful info.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • No, you don't open nexuiz.exe in OllyDbg. Somewhere in OllyDbg's options menu, you can set it as debugger (IIRC it was something with JIT). Then it will show up automatically when something crashes (you can actually close OllyDbg then), instead of the usual Windows crash dialog.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

Does that one's nexuiz.exe not crash any more?

  • It would be good to know if those crashes only show up on boxes with ATi cards (iirc only ATi-on-XP-users reported crashes here) or if it would be useful for Nvidia users as well.

    Who knows more?

  • As I know the cause, I rather think it has to do with the installed version of msvcrt.dll. Does any of the "crashers" use SP2?

  • Okay, I asked because LordHavoc suspected it may be just happening on SP1. So that's ruled out now.

  • My nexuiz 2.4 crashes too. I tried the hotfix, which doesnt change anything there. SDL works.

    Win2000 (SP4)
Radeon9800pro (using ATI Catalsyst Control Center Version 1.2.2217.17271)

I dont have an error log with the standard nexuiz.exe!
Here is the Dr.Watson log I get with the hotfix

  • That's inside the ATI driver. Can't fix that...
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.
