The shotgun --- its design

Developer discussion of experimental fixes, changes, and improvements.

  • I viewed the YouTube promotional video for 2.4 and while nearly all the weapons had undergone changes --- all of them good --- I was surprised to see that the shotgun still looks like a wand.

I like the way it looks up front --- a mean, multi-barelled weapon --- but from the first-person perspective, it lacks horizontal depth. It's like you are holding a stick.

Don't get me wrong, I like its design but may you guys make it feel more heavier? It doesn't look like a sci-fi shotgun when viewed from above.

Just an observation, not meaning to be pushy.

I might not check back on this thread until it's old and dusty, so pre-emptive thanks.

  • I agree 100% that Doc's new shotgun is awesome and a huge huge improvement over the old. This one actually looks like a shotgun and not a plastic toy.

I really like the new weapon models for 2.4 and beyond. I'd still like to see new models for the laser, hagar, and crylink as well.

    Nice work Doc!

The only thing that bothers me is the shot origin. It comes out of the middle of the gun :-\

I think it's hardcoded and the model don't use the same origin than the previous one.

  • Yea, shotguns shouldn't have a clip. Also, if it were made shorter and fatter, the shot origin might work better.

    what fov are you using?
because I bet it's like 120 and for us normal players we'd only see the top of the gun...
we should force screenshots to use fov 90 or echo the fov first :S
if it's fov 90, then the gun should be moved back a bit
    aaaaaaaand with that clip
it looks more like some automatic thingy... MG-ish

  • I think the new model is excellent. Shotguns that are designed for firefights often have clips, although they usually only contain 3 or 4 shots. I think that the barrel should be shortened slightly, but other than that I love it.

  • Looks good. I prefer this to the current model.

As for looking futuristic... Well, shotguns aren't futuristic weapons. I'm not sure what could be done here. The Daewoo USAS-12 seems to be a fairly futuristic looking clip-loading shotgun.

If people don't like the clip loading design then a drum loading design such as the Pancor Jackhammer may be an alternative.

  • I've been using Doc's shotgun for a few weeks now... I like it but it feels too thin. I'd like it to be shorter and fatter. feels like I'm pointing a qtip at people right now.

Lots actually. Yes, your Pancor Jackhammer is a VERY sound example.

Also Bungie seems to have accomplished the futuristic look without wildly deviating from the standard shotgun design:

    Halo Shotgun Pic 1

    Halo Shotgun Pic 2

It's impressive how a few simple lines can achieve a futuristic look.

The 4 glowing lines in the shotgun model in the above screenshot shown by [-z-] is a good start though it can still be improved upon.

Also, guys, please remember the theme, Nexuiz is all about bright, saturated colors in its skins. Please don't make the new shotgun black.

  • @Z: I realize that the guns are indeed black Z but the percentage of the colored parts of the Machine Gun's and the Nex's (? Right name?) relative to their bodies are substantial enough to rivet the players' eyes to the colored parts.

I apologize about that. I should have stated my point clearer.

The shotgun in your screenshot though, has too few colored lights and lines, hence my suggestion. It's also why I added:

Its percentage of colors and the way it looks currently deviates from Nexuiz's theme IMO.

    But that's just my opinion.

    Peace!

  • Garish colors are a bad thing, and make them look like toys. Gunmetal black FTW.

  • While I agree with vibrant colors being bad for guns, Nexuz has always been this way.

I mean an Ochre-colored grenade launcher? But it's fun! :D

EDIT: In case I am misunderstood: yes I support the "desaturation" of colors in 2.4 but do make the new shotgun be in line what the Nex and Machine Gun have followed in terms of "other color-to-black" ratio.

This way, there will be a COHESION in terms of design and in keeping up with the theme the developers have taken.

  • Just because that's how Nexuiz has been, doesn't mean that's how it should be- resistance to change is a hindrance to progress.

I couldn't agree more. I like the new styles Morphed went with.

Agreed. But maybe some sort of artwork guidelines should be set then? I know as far as physics and gameplay are concerned the simple, old-school deathmatch principles have been kept.
Setting principles for the artwork would help a lot too.
It surely wouldn't be appealing to mix cartoon and realistic artwork for example.

    Variety has its place.
Putting Mickey Mouse as the main character in Call of Duty would decrease sales rather than increase them. I promise.

Making a statement and following it with an extreme example doesn't make it fact. It's still your opinion. Hell, I can argue that your example would kick ass. I'd love to go into cities as a crazed mickey mouse popping off 'tourists'.

I see nothing wrong with variety... it'll still only be used at the discretion of server admins and/or Alientrap.

For the record, mickey mouse is already in Nexuiz.

  • I'm afraid my opinion happens to indeed be fact. :(

Really, I don't even care, I just said something so I could misquote torus as saying "resistance to Dave is a hindrance to progress.", which was a Great Success!

I do not know why it came to this. Like I said I LIKE the new weapons. They have changed.

So let me get this straight.

I like the new weapons = I like change.

My observation is that the shotgun model you support STICKS out from the excellent (read: good, I like, excellent, awesome, you get the point.) NEW turn the weapon design took. I just would like it to be more akin IN TERMS OF DESIGN THEMES. That thing looks like it could fit in CS and SWAT games.

Add more blinkos and whatnots that scream Nexuiz and it will be good.

Toning down Dave's example: please do not put CS-like weapons in Nexuiz.

I do not know where this misconception that I do not like change sprung from. I hope this post clears it up. If it doesn't, well, each to his own.
