  • I went to wikipedia and saw a link to download Nexuiz so i did after It finished i went to extract the zip file and my AVG 8 said it caught a general trojan, Has anyone else had this problem and dont blame it on my AVG its never been wrong and it updates every 4 hours, keep in mind that the link brought me to this website so what gives is this place a trap? I dont who your trying to fool but im not one to be messed with and rest assured i will be writing many reviews about this site in the future. I hope that the administraters of this site read this and are prepared to fix the problem, by the way i went back to wikipedia and posted on the history of this game what i have written here. I just realised that i downloaded an older version and that may be the problem but if i download 2.4.2 and have the same result i will be very unhappy.

  • Yes, this game is designed to trigger antivirus software as to increase the difficulty of playing the game. If you have a good hex-editor, you should easily be able to remove this false virus from the game's binary and begin enjoying the game.

  • Firstly learn to use your PC before writting anything. Otherwise other people will laugh from you.

There is Nexuiz listed here. Check before downloading.

Go on then, prove in the source code that Nexuiz is a trojan.

Why are you downloading 2.3? Why aren't you downloading 2.4.2? Where are you downloading it from? Why are you still running an OS thats so fundamentally insecure that you have to have 3rd party software to protect it from attack?

  • Without the NAME of the suspected trojan, nothing can be checked. What is the NAME of the trojan AVG reported?
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

That's a good one - I must remember that
<Community>: Why was the name "Nexuiz" licensed to IllFonic in a way that allows IllFonic to use the name without any suffix or subtitle for a commercial console game?

  • So, to give a résumé on the points that were mentioned here.

To avoid such a mess in the future, you have to make sure, that:
    1) If the game is obviously freeware and you can get it legally, then get it from the OFFFICIAL website and only the NEWEST version.
    2) Avoid third party websites when looking for Open Source software, especially the ones with "crackz hackz warez" tags all around.
    3) [optional] Screw Windows and use Linux or a Macintosh for surfing, so that you don't have to care about all this virus stuff...
    4) Stop threatening the developers, this crap is frustrating to read and is just plain stupid.
If there is a solution, you're gonna get it here, just stop whining.

  • Actually, I remember something. Nexuiz 2.3 was indeed flagged as a possible trojan by some antivirus. The cause however was laughable: it was TGA files with a very high compression ratio in the .pk3. The antivirus thought Nexuiz was an attack on virus scanners like 42.zip (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decompression_bomb), but all it really was was a mostly black TGA file and 7zip compressing it well.

But this has been fixed, by RLE compressing the TGAs that (in that case in the past) ClamAV reported, so RLE does part of the compression and zip doesn't do such a high compression ratio. In any case, a clear example of stupid heuristics.

  • Your antivirus software has just informed you the package you downloaded has a virus, do you:

    a) Verify the source you downloaded from is legit
    b) Alert the developers to a possible issue
    c) Bitch, moan, threaten, post incorrect information on wikipedia in all caps to warn people of this false positive you are assuming is a real virus because you are not one to be reckoned with.

  • First my AVG only said it was a General Trojan and removed with no difficulty what soever, my problem was i wanted to know if this was normal and what i should do. Secondly, I did not know there was a new version until i checked the news forums. Third, I refuse to pay four thousand dollars for a computer made by mac, when i have a pc for a third the price and is more versatile. Fourth i got the version of the game from sourceforge which this site sent me to.Fifth I changed the history on wikipedia because thats why its there so people can inform others of possible problems and in my haste i deleted the original history for that im sorry. Sixth if you do not have information that is helpful I would prefer that you not reply, Seven I was not frightened by the trojan I just wanted know whether any one else had this problem or if somehow i had made a mistake. Eighth thank you for the replies that where helpfull and provided me with imformation i needed. Ninth I am new to playing open source games and i am still learning, i started with alien arena and shadowflare of which i have had no problems and enjoyed them very much, so i found sauerbraten/cube2 and also enjoyed it, I found a few freeware sites that showcased Neuiz and thought it was interesting and i thought id check it out and here we are ive never had this problem with any of the other opensource games and i thought i would alert those who might be able to do some thing about it. And finally Ten Iwas alil peeved about the trojan and maybe i said and did some things out of haste and inexpeirence for that i am sorry i didnt mean to impune this ste or cause any problems I hope all of you will understand that yes Im a neewb but i felt it was important to alert those without knowledge of this before they did anything that could cause problems with their machines not everyone uses the proper antivirus and antispyware protection and i was only trying to be helpful in my neewbie sort of way.

  • That thing with the Mac was optional :P Though I'm using one not because of this particular reason.
Next time, please don't panic and don't haste and rush in with your judgement, because there are people who definitely will feel offended.

Did you get the new version already?
    Does it work now?

  • Try a download manager like GetRight. You can pause your download and continue at any time, whenever your want. I used this stuff a lot when I still had dial-up connection.
Though I don't know if the SourceForge servers support these download accelerators...

  • See, we're here to help, and won't harm anybody with trojans, viruses, or whatever :)
Also, let this be a lesson for you: you have to learn to manage your temper a bit more, and try to think before you do anything on the internet, wether it's a link to click on, or any word you say. What you've done to the wikipedia page was wandalism, and a not nice way to grab attention. At least you've contacted us here on the forum too, so we could help you so you could solve your problem.
If I'm correct, I've seen several times you've said "freeware" sites. I'd NEVER EVER visit a site like that, for two reasons: they might have an outdated version of that program (like in this case - or if I see right, Ubuntu repo hardy heron has 2.4.1, not 2.4.2), and it's not an authentic, original source, you I can never be sure what extra present they have packed with the stuff ;)
Also, Nexuiz is not freeware, it's _open source_ . Not the same :) In any case, you see an open source program, and you run in trouble, be sure to contact the developers first, before doing anything else. They always have the right answere for you, and most probably they'll try to help you.

For the rest of the commenters:
Like I've said, I've so much disappinted by the behaviour of some of you. Nexuiz is not just famous for it's fancy graphics, and all of that, but for the MOST WELL MANNERED, HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY COMMUNITY AROUND!
    -1 karma!

"Nexuiz has a trojan" is not a FACT then. "AVG misdetects Nexuiz as a trojan" may be one, although this is not verified for AVG, but ClamAV, and already fixed.

The problem is that detecting "zip bombs" is very dodgy. But zip bombs are, even if there is one, ONLY harming virus scanners, NEVER destroying any data, crashing computers, etc.
